My elderly but active aunt and uncle are coming up for a week next week because they are considering a move to Charlotte. They are currently living in Florida and hate it, and are originally New Yorkers like me (I guess that makes them halfbacks?). I know they are working with a realtor on Monday, but they also asked if I could show them around a bit. Now, here's the deal - I don't know ANYTHING about the suburbs around Charlotte. I was hoping some of you could give me some areas worth checking out based on the following criteria:

1 - They are looking for a ranch (old people hate stairs) priced in the $150 - 200k range.

2 - One of their main complaints about Florida is that they are in geriatric land. They are definitely looking for a more vibrant community than they are in now where the main event of the day does not involve shuffleboard and comparing denture cleaners.

3 - My uncle thinks the bread in Florida sucks.

4 - I would like to keep them within a half hour or so of where I live in NoDA, because home cooked Sunday meals sound appealing.

5 - My aunt got her license at 55 and isn't too keen on driving on interstates. A community where she can get to most of her daily shopping without having to take a highway would be best.

6 - I wouldn't put them anywhere near where I live based on the transitional nature of the area. Safety is a major priority here.

I know that the realtor has been pushing Indian Trail in Union County or something like that, so they will be going there on Monday. I suppose I will need to take them to places that are not in the general vicinity of that area (which I have never heard of anyway).

Any thoughts?

Raintree in South Charlotte has ranches in that price range, in Southbury and Wellington. You can probably get to NoDa w/in 30 minutes as long as it's not rush hour. And it's convenient to any kind of shopping they could possibly want, without going on the highway.

There is actually a ranch for sale on my old cul de sac - it's about 1600 sf and it's listed for $195,900. http://www.carolinahome.com MLS 666414

The realtor may be pushing Indian Trail for a couple of reasons. Several nice neighborhoods with ranchers in those price ranges. Will not have to travel highway much at all as there are numerous shopping areas you can get to without even hitting 74. Still within a half hour of you for those home cooked meals.
