Hoping to move from Canton, OH to NC (Charlotte)
Hi,
I've lived in Canton my entire life but since I'm going to be losing my job within a month or so, I've decided I would like to move someplace warmer and closer to my daughter who lives in TN and basically start a new life. I'm a woman in my early 50's who will be looking for a good job (executive assistant, preferably), nice apartment or condo (tired of home maintenance), nice people to meet, a good gym to work out, and plenty of things to do. I've been searching the Internet for potential jobs and have found a few but with seemingly lower pay than what I'm currently making. Is there a similar area to Charlotte with better potential for finding a higher paying job? I have 35+ years of job experience. Is Charlotte the right place to come to?
Thanks.

I hear that Pittsburgh has 20,000 job openings right now plus it's cooler than Canton.

Yes, I think Charlotte, Asheville or Nashville would be good for you. Either would put you closer to your daughter! Good luck and have a lot of patience looking for a job. Just keep applying

Charlotte is definitely about as close to Tennessee as you can get.

Please, please, please do not come here without a job. Our unemployment numbers are 11.5% and growing. Those jobs that ARE open are lowering their salaries for incoming people. Charlotte is a good place, but, jobs are scarce right now.

Well, I am not going to sugar coat it for you. Lost my Exec Asst job back in Sept and still out of work, over 20 years exp with some great companies. It's not going to be easy and I'm not being discouraging, I'm being realistic.

So glad you responded, as I knew you had the same background as this poster.
People don't want to believe how bad things in our job market are here, but it is brutal right now. Anyone who comes without a job in place first is just being very foolish.

I actually have something to contribute to a topic. Yay.
I'm a former professional employment counselor who has been reviewing NC job openings since I finished graduate school in 2007. I have seen (with my own eyes) positions in all fields disappear and the salaries decrease.
I mainly look @ positions in healthcare and education... the supposedly stable fields... and if I had to enumerate it... I'd say that there were 25 positions in 2007 for every 1 position right now.. I'd also bet that's an under-estimation of the real number.
There's competition from new college grads, from experienced professionals, and from transplants. All of that while the companies are forced to cut services and downsize.
I don't know your financial situation... but I can say that Charlotte is not the best job market in the state. RDU seems to have a better variety of positions. The extreme regions... mountains/coasts... few positions. I hear eastern TN has a lot of various openings right now. Have you looked into the Knoxville area?
Good luck with your move.
