I am little skeptical of the "suddenly crime is way down". It really seems strange to me w/ that once people started speaking up about all the crime in Charlotte that suddenly the numbers start going down.
If the numbers are true that is fabulous.
yeah, it gets that way 'round here sometimes.
anyways, always good to see crime #'s down, let's hope it's because of actions being taken, not because we haven't seen these typical "crime waves" roll thru the area yet. the report is a little confusing though, it's based on "certain neighborhoods" of meck for one month periods. so does that mean, murders are down 58%...on ani's block? "hey, half as many people were murdered on my block this past month than the same month in '08!".

In 2007, CQ Press ranked Charlotte the 50th least safe out of 378 cities — the worst score for a North Carolina city.
New York was the 237th least safe and Los Angeles 135th. Correction: As of June 1, 2008, CQ Press is no longer a part of Congressional Quarterly.
After the jump, selected city rankings.

And what about Cleveland's #'s? I'm sure they're right up there with Detroit! I know Charlotte's crime #'s are nowhere close to matching Cleveland, Detroit, Newark, NJ or St. Louis, as those cities are usually the cities that consistently rank in the top 5 most violent places every year. When Charlotte gets to that point (hopefully that never happens) then I would be worried about it being a very dangerous place.
I hate to be a naysayer, but I'm still skeptical. We'll see if this trend holds through the summer. If it does, I will believe the drops. Wasn't the big spike in crime last summer? Crime always is less in the winter than summer, so I think it's premature to get too happy about it before we have a whole year of decline.
I wish Negative Nelly would take a nap -- for a few years
