The flight from expensive Northeastern metro areas also is fueling phenomenal growth in Sun Belt states such as North Carolina, where the economy is strong.
Mecklenburg County, home of booming financial center and NASCAR capital Charlotte, grew on all fronts: total population up 3.9% in one year to 827,445; net gains from other counties of 18,126 people, up 22.3%;
net jump in immigrants of 5.6%, or more than 4,500 people.
