Hey all,

I'm looking for any suggestions on a good value for money company to get my AC replaced in my house. Had an estimate from a local company with a "catchy jingle" for like $7300, and that's with a big discount and money off for repairs they already did. I just couldn't afford it. Any other suggestions for good reliable companies with reasonable prices?

Thanks,

Mark

Not knowing your specifics, but if you are talking about the price for replacing a central air unit $7,300 sounds like a decent price. These things are not cheap to replace and depending upon the age of your home, there might be other items that add to the cost. If it is done right, they have to pull a permit in Mecklenburg and make sure the work will pass a county building inspection. However I would call around for other estimates if you are uncomfortable with this price.

There is a $1500 tax credit this year if you replace it with a unit that meets a certain efficiency. That might help to mitigate some of the cost.

In line with this - what can I expect the cost just for a service / maintenance check-up on an A/C system?

We had our 10-month inspection last week and were reminded that the 5-year warranty on our A/C unit is dependent upon having it serviced on an annual basis.

and

Between $100-$300 depending on what services they provide in the maintenance. Make sure you know exactly what you're paying for before you pay for it. Any and all quotes should be as detailed as possible with diagnosis. Meaning if they need to seal a duct make sure it's on the quote and accounted for in the final price.

Thanks. Given that the unit is < 1 year old, I'm hoping there are no fixes needed (and if so, they can be covered under the warranty).

They should be and most likely just a clean, if anything, will be needed.

The company with the catchy jingle (TV & radio) gives great service, but are without a doubt THE most expensive in town.
By a wide margin...

Not sure if prices are comparable, but my fiance works for a heating/cooling company in MI where we are and he said a new ac unit/installation should be within $1100-$1400.

That sounds way low. The first thing we always want to do is find the cheapest price, that's not always the best approach when you're buying something that is suppose to be with you over a decade. You need to make sure you will always have someone that understands your system and your house and cares about your satisfaction. So many time people look to save every buck and later on down the road realize it's now going to cost them twice as much by trying to save a buck without heavy investigations.
