Default Mulch, wood chips or pine needles??

I'm a new homebuyer and need to landscape a little. I have NO idea which of these to get for the climate down here! Are there certain advantages to each? Also, does anyone know of a cheap place to purchase - I live on the north side of town.

Thanks for your help!

it's personal preference, but you'll notice the mulch of choice for commercial guys is pine needles...

Use the "search this forum" tool at the top right to search for mulch. There have been one or more threads in the past year.

We took out the pine needles that we had and replaced it with Cedar Mulch. Cedar mulch supposedly deters bugs, smells good, and we like the color it keeps rather than the fading pine needles. Of course, this will have to be replaced regularly (as does pine needles). Some people I've seen are opting for rubber mulch. Not an expert, just what I did in my yard.

To me, I can come up a good argument for each.

Its mostly personal preference.....

We noticed termites in our woodchips, so will stay away from those. We just put down a bunch of pine needles.

Default Cedar mulch

We were told that pine needles and bugs love each other but we use just mulch last year and still had a bug problem. This year however we did 2 inches of cedar mulch and 2 inches of regular brown nice looking mulch on top. Supposedly this will do the trick! At least this is what our bug man told us and the guys at Lowe's.

Rubber mulch can kill stuff if it gets too much sun. It holds in the heat.

Wallace Farms on Eastfield

There is another place on Harris Blvd if you are heading West towards Northlake on the right hand side, I don't recall the name. Do a google search for "mulch your zip code".

We recently called both for a truck bed (1cf) of mulch and they were both within a few dollars of each other.

Do you change out the pine needles seasonally? We have a ton of pines in the home we just bought. What time of year do the needles fall?
