Well, I can tell you that my younger brother, who's in the mortgage lending industry, recently left for Indianapolis for what sounds like a pretty decent job and career opportunity in that field. I can't say if he'll ever be back.

We moved to Charlotte for a change of lifestyle, warmer weather, good place to raise a family, lower taxes, etc. We did not come with jobs, but with money to invest in a local business. That business failed and my husband could not find a job that could support our family.
When he got a good offer to come back to NY, we jumped on it!
Now, we are back in NJ and I have to say, I have a new appreciation for my home state. I loved being in Charlotte, don't get me wrong, but I now realize how much this area has to offer. I definitely took it for granted.

I understand that..and, I think that it comes with a certain amount of "mature wisdom", too.

I hear you ... we're in a very similar situation. Lived in southern OR, husband's job dissolved, moved here for a job for him and b/c I missed my family (all in MD/PA/NJ), which was so dumb, I see them less than I did out there, and there was a hell of a lot more to do out there, and thank goodness he did not get a job here. Now we are trying to leave to go back out to OR. Was beautiful out there, I can't believe we were there and I wanted to leave, husband never wanted to, and I now realize I took all of that for granted - the beauty of the mountains, the outstanding hiking, rafting and outdoor activities that we love. We are trying so hard to sell our house, we want to move back so badly. We've learned a lot, but it's a bitter pill to swallow.

Interesting. I am sort of the opposite. I grew up in the South/Mid-Atlantic, and now I am in the Midwest (Chicago). Love it here but now I want to get back to Charlotte or VA. I learned to appreciate it's beauty and East Coast location after I left. I guess it goes both ways.

I already left but stayed in the Carolinas. Charlotte was not the place for us and I am glad we have moved on.

Will be moving for grad school as soon as possible. I'm not a fan of Charlotte proper, I just wish the outlying areas were around another city. I love living in Matthews, and I love the diversity. Just wish Charlotte could mature a bit, into a city that cares about long term infrastructure instead of the next best thing.

I prefer to stay here in Charlotte, but the calls that I'm getting for jobs lately are in Arkansas, Canada, Minnesota (you get the picture!). So I may have to take a "sabbatical" until the economy and job market pick up. I'm hoping that whatever happens we'll be able to keep the house here in NC though, 'cause I'll plan on coming home!
