Default things to see in charlotte

i realize this isn't the best way to see charlotte, but my wife and i just moved to raleigh from MA this past weekend, and we're going to be in charlotte to go to ikea this coming saturday. i'd love to stay for a couple days and look around, but we have too much to take care of at home right now. so assuming i get there saturday morning and would probably leave after dinner, any suggestions of areas or places that are a must see to appreciate charlotte?

we'll be back many times, i'm sure, but right now it's just a taste.

thanks!

Beware -- the NASCAR crowd is in town this weekend, so there's going to be lots of traffic on 85 near IKEA. On the positive side, in downtown Charlotte, there's the Speed Street festival on Saturday, which is pretty interesting if you like street festivals.

I agree with you not a good weekend to visit Ikea.

I would try to stay away from the Speedway area. I live nearby and I home going to hole up for the weekend. One place we recently visited was the Lazy 5 Ranch. It was the best experience. Not expensive and a lot of fun! I would recommend it to anyone.

Have fun at IKEA! If you have time visit uptown. You could eat there and then walk around. What do you like to do? Do you have any special interests?

Perhaps you can visit the Levine Museum of the New South (hours 10am -5) or Discovery Place (http://www.discoveryplace.org/home/discovery_place-home.php - broken link) (10am -6)

Here is a thread that may be helpful -Best places to bring first time visitors in Charlotte

well that sucks about this being a bad weekend, because we really need to go. we desperately need some furniture which we want to get there. i guess we'll struggle through it :\
we like shopping, walking around cool downtown city stuff, going to interesting restaurants and bars... (and a lot of other things, which i won't have time for this time). is there like a main street downtown with stuff like that, or is it scattered into little sections like Raleigh?

thanks guys

i picked a restaurant (Blue...mediterranean) that appears to be Uptown. so that's cool. yes, sunnykayak, that is a good list. im pretty excited, actually. i didnt want to move to charlotte from MA because of various factors, so i kind of forgot to find out about it. now that i'm finally down here, it's like this whole big new exciting place to check out. yay!
