I will be heading to Raleigh at around midnight on Sunday (going home after attending a wedding in Charlotte). Will the Coca-Cola 600 be over by then, and would I-85N be very crowded? Is there a better alternate route from Charlotte to the Triangle area, on that day?

I'd love to stay in Charlotte overnight and avoid all the traffic, but I have an appointment in Raleigh on Monday that I can't miss.

Thanks!

If I were you I'd look to take I-85 to I-77. Get off of 77 at the Concord/Huntersville exit and make a right. You'll take that about 5 or so miles and you can get back onto I-85 north from there. Honestly I don't know how much traffic there would be on 85 around that time but I really wouldn't chance it. If the race ends after 11 God knows what you'd hit around that area. You might even pick up race traffic taking the way I suggested. At least you'd bypass a lot of it and be that much closer to where 85 opens to three lanes.

your timing couldn't be worse - race will end between 1030 and 1130 - and the people will pour out onto 85 - and 85 is TWO (great planning NC DOT) just north of the speedway...You may want to go all the way up 77 to statesville, then across on 40...150,000 people will be pouring out of the speedway that night...ugggh.

I'd do exactly what thestem said. Take I-77 to Statesville and hop on I-40 East. 40 & 85 merge in the Greensboro area heading toward Raleigh.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I'll tale I-77N to Statesville as you advised.

I'll report back on Monday. Wish me luck!

Well, I left the wedding on Sunday night and started the drive back to Raleigh at around 11 pm. I decided to chance it on I-85N instead of taking I-77. When I got near the Speedway (exits 48/49) I saw a lot of cars, but it was still very manageable. I sailed through, and thought that the race must still be going on and most fans hadn't left yet.

When I opened up the newspaper this morning, I saw that the race had been postponed! No wonder traffic on I-85N was normal last night...

yes and even on a normal race night the highways are probally fins considering those bozos at the track cant get cars out of the parking lot, it took me two and a half hours to get off 49 into the race track at 2 pm and then when it was called due to rain it took 4 hours to get out of the parking lot alone.

what a cluster.......
