I really enjoy Charlotte but all other cities seem miles ahead of Charlotte. To compare Charlotte with cities like Atlanta, Tampa, Denver, Las Vegas...it's crazy. Yea 10-15 years down the road Charlotte might reach full potential, but for now..... You often see ATL - DC - LA - CHICAGO - NYC as the world class cites of america, you never will see Charlotte in this category, doesnt even look right. Limited features are a turnoff as well such as light rail; lame nightlife; diversity; arts & cultural scene. I know that Im not the only one that feels like this...I hear people complain all the time at my workplace...
No, but I wasn't looking for "world class" when I moved here. If it ever gets to that point hopefully I'll be able to realize a nice profit on my house & move somewhere else.
If I wanted a big city w/ bright lights I woulda moved to one of the cities you mentioned. Who said it was *world class*? And what makes you think everyone wants it to be like that? j/w
I have always wondered about the young who came to Charlotte and if they thought it would be like a DC, Chicago, or NYC? The reason my wife and I moved to Charlotte was because it was a smaller city. We had no plans to live Uptown. We would rather not work there. Luckily, we both don't. If we wanted a big city would have stayed in the DC area. We both love the suburbs. We love that there are alot less people in Charlotte. The weather is better than DC and NYC. Its less crowded than all those cities mentioned by the OP.
What makes a world class city anyways? Bars? Public Transport? Sports Teams? Museums? Theatre? Doesnt Charlotte have all that? The public transport isnt up to NYC or DC but LA's public transport isnt either. I would consider Charlotte a "World Class" small city. It has everything but the huge population and cost of living that ruins the other cities.
There is always a better city than the one you live in. If you chase something better then you are always on the move. I do agree that Charlotte could have more "stuff" but you can't build everything at once. I think Charlotte is moving in the right direction but the aim shouldn't be world class. The only cities I would assume are world class are: NY, Boston, Chicago, DC, SF, LA and maybe Miami.
YEP. We are not world class. We are just Southern - or were at one time. Now I think we are called Mid Atlantic, LOL. Just a smallish used-to-be-Southern city . . . nice place to raise a family. You are gonna have to go elsewhere for the bright lights. But no worries! We have an easily navigable International Airport wh/ will provide transport for you to go visit all the world class cities - to your heart's desire.
Hopefully, Dscott, you and your coworkers are young enuff that you can plan your careers so you can find jobs in one of those world class cities you enjoy comparing Charlotte to. Plan things correctly and if you make that your goal - you can do it! You really should try living in CHI, LA, DC, NYC . . . I like Dallas and think it is a well rounded city, too. Don't sit and complain about Charlotte - explore the rest of the USA. And then there is London, too . . .
If I were in my 20s . . . I sure would take advantage of seeing the rest of the USA. Don't stay in ANY city that doesn't meet your needs . . . there really is a big ole world out there.
Location: Some got six month some got one solid. But me and my buddies all got lifetime here

You're putting a lot of effort into this, aren't you...
I started thinking about this again and probably most cities in the US are just job centers. Good places to live but you really go there for jobs. World Class would equate to expensive cities and places you would go to visit or live if money wasn't an option. Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Houston, Denver, etc.... are great cities but would you really go there for a week long vacation to see the sights? Probably not. It's just my classification though.

I'd go to any of the cities you mentioned to play golf or go to a resort or spa. In fact, I have been to resorts/spas in every one of the cities you mentioned above. See - that's the thing w/ discussions like this. What I may find as something very enticing about a city may be something another person would not care about - or even notice.
