Do you have a link w/ dimensions? As long as it is not longer than 12' in either dimension, you can put a building in your backyard here in Charlotte - without a permit.
But, people can't live in that building, right? The zoning would have to be changed to multi-family instead of single family residential.
that google thing is so funny! Although I'm glad I bought one, because I never would have known, I HATE living in a big house. Our old house was 1200 sq. ft. and I would trade this 2600sqft monster in for that in a second. I love the Katrina Cottages! My dream house is similar to one of the cottages I saw in a magazine.

See below, it is larger that 12', but does it being on a trailer get around that?
House width: 8′
House length: 19′
Trailer Size: 7′ x 18′
Dry Weight: 5700 lbs
Kitchen: 6′ x 4′
Road Height: 13′ 5″
Porch: 2 ½’ x 2 ½’
Main Room: 7 ½’ x 6 ½’
Bathroom: 6′ x 3′
Ceiling height: 6′ 3″
Loft height: 3′ 8″
all measurements are approximate

Well, now . . . you can run electricity to any outbuilding on your property . . .
Would you really care if I put that cute little cottage in my back yard and my son lived out there?
My cousin was so annoying as a teenager . . . his parents had a shed out back (w/ electricity) and my cousin spent a whole summer insulating it and fixing it up. . . and he lived out there his senior year in high school, Hee Hee. He came inside for bathroom duties, of course, and he often ate w/ the family, but essentially - he lived out back in his "upgraded" shed for a year. I doubt the neighbors even noticed. And if they did - they surely didn't care.

Oh - 18' long. Now that would not work as far as putting it on a city lot. You have to get a permit for anything bigger than 12', even if you build it yourself. The problem would be w/ septic/sewer. I doubt that would be approved. However, if it were for an elderly person to live in, I would surely petition for an allowance. Housing for an elderly family member is a real concern and you would think the city would at least consider that sort of request, as long as the building passed all required inspections for a permit.
ETA: I have never seen any reg about buildings on wheels or on a trailer, LOL. But now you have me VERY curious . . .

This would be in the suburbs, No sewer or septic. This would be for me, a 25 year old white male. I have friends who I can park in their yard and they said they would charge me $0 - $25 a month for use of shower, bathroom and laundry.
Where do you even find these rules/laws/codes? I can't find them anywhere, how are we supposed to know until you get in trouble? I prefer to do this 100% legal, but its hard to abide by weird specifics of laws if you can't find them spelled out somewhere.

I tried finding out about a trailer w/o septic hook up but cannot locate an ordinance that applies. I did find out that should you put an outbuilding on your property, you are to get a zoning permit, even if it is under 12' and you build it yourself.
I am sure there are other ordinances/regs/codes about trailers and outbuildings but I just haven't found them.

If you were outside of the city limits on a couple of acres of land and that thing was stuck back in the woods somewhere, I would have no problem. But, if it was in the backyard of my neighbour's house, (in a subdivision within Charlotte) yes, I would call code enforcement.
