So I have been absolutely obsessed with a new trend called the tiny house movement. They are small home (100-150 square feet *no typo*) they can be built by someone for 50k or DIY for around 10-20k. Most other towns will classify it as a trailer/mobile home. They are built of high grade materials and really challenge the way we think of traditional housing
My questions are:
-What are Charlotte's rules about mobile homes?
-If you had this in the backyard of someone's house (with their permission of course) would the city ever know you had this? if so how?
-How often / when do tax assessors actually come on to people's property?
-Any other laws / codes / etc that would apply to this and prevent it?

Who would want to live in a house that small? Why would anyone want something like that? I think my treehouse I had when I was growing up as bigger lol...
Being a family of four, obviously we could not live in 98 sf, but the 700-800 sf cottages could really work.
You would just have to simplify and seriously de-clutter.
IKEA has some 250-500-700 sf 'homes' setup in their store, and the wife and I think the minimization is very cool.
On the flipside I would have to have a 2-3 car garage/workshop...

I don't think my 55" Plasma TV could fit in a home that small, and no, I'm not giving that up...if anything, I'd love to be able to afford to go bigger

Well, mullman, the reason that IKEA has those places set up in their store is because most apartments/houses in Europe really ARE that small and people need ideas on how to live in them. Some places in big cities here, (NYC, Chicago) are that size, too.
One of the big advantages of Charlotte is that there is a lot of room here to spread out relatively inexpensively. In Chicago, there would be no way to have a 2-3 car workshop at your house. Garage, yes, but, it would be accessed by an alley and you cannot work on cars (or anything else for that matter) in the alley.
Now to the OP; having one of those mini-houses in the backyard for someone else to live in is just asking for trouble. Lots of zoning regs that would be violated as well as your homeowners insurance being voided by having another residence on a property that is zoned for only one residence. Better to buy a piece of raw land somewhere and park it there.
I have a flat in central London. It's about that small LOL Seriously I have a 1000 sq ft (or slightly less)flat and before we moved to Charlotte we thought we were on the pigs back so to speak. We had two bedrooms, a sitting room and a large kitchen/diner with a back yard. Now we live in a 2800 sq ft house (some of you would consider this modest) but we think it's huge and often joke about having to live in our garage for acclimatisation purposes in case we have to move back.

I know this, I get around.
