I came across the RIF plan on UCPS's website:

http://www.ucps.k12.nc.us/uploads/Th...0(6-23-09).pdf

Seems the lay-offs may not be through (depends on the State budget), but this is the policy for who goes and why.

that is a damn shame! pay cut for teachers how low can they go. North Carolina shame on you. Thank God for Unions. Thats why North Carolina teachers need to unite and create a union, if you all had a union they wouldn't dare do this. Thats why NC will continue to be a second rate city / state...

yeah, yeah, right

California, which has some of the biggest teacher unions is a dying state, so in debt and not able to pay their employees or bills on time.

If you think for one minute ANY North Carolinian wants to live in a state like California (or Michigan, or Masschusetts or Ohio or New York - all LOVELY labor union states) you're crazy. We may have some problems here, but I wouldn't trade ours for those the other states are having, ever.

u need to visit new york,, a first rate city / state. North Carolina cannot compare. we have a strong union that will not allow government to balance their budget on teachers backs. I invite u to visit New York and see how we are improving. Our scores have gone up in leaps and bounds. Teachers cannot be anybody's escape goat because of the UNITED FEDERATION OF TEACHERS. boy I love my union

I don't really see why people here freak at the word union- a lot of positives come from them.... Yes, there are also negatives and politics, but I find that states with unions for teachers have great advantages....

I've been to NYC - many times. Nice to visit, but you couldn't pay me a trillion dollars to live there, but I'm so happy it works for you. The reality is, many of your fellow New Yorkers find life here in NC much more palatable.

You can keep your unions, they have ruined every state they dominant.

No my dear they are returning and disappointed. NC has nothing to offer teachers right now. New Yorkers who find NC palatable are not teachers. NC teachers dont have a union and you guys are still in trouble and can't pay their salary and have to cut their pay and you can't pay your other bills, so you see UNIONS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. IT IS A DAMN SHAME HOW YOU GUYS TREAT YOuR TEACHERS SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!!!

UNION 4 EVER! UNITED FEDERATION OF TEACHERS I love you!
it is written in our contract, government cannot balance their budget at our peril by laying off teachers and reducing their pay, thats right!
