I do not know the answer, but I wish to.
I would hope it to be Robert E Lee's wife...
What a gentlemen's surrender is was at Appomattox (albeit sad).
That is a great day trip for any transplants - gorgeous area.
My brother went to Hampden-Sydney so I used to get there frequently.

Sorry mullman - Robert E. Lee's wife was Martha Washington's great-granddaughter from Virginia.

I want to say Braxton Bragg's wife, but that seems too easy. Could it be Pickett's wife? I'm pretty sure that the marriage was in Richmond, but I seem to recall that she was from elsewhere.

Oh that would be Stonewall Jackson's wife, Mary Anna Morrison Jackson. Presumably Stonewall street was named as such for this reason though there is some controversy about that. I believe she might be buried in Va, but I am not sure about that.
They had a house on Trade street.

YOU GOT IT!!! Yes! Most people are not aware that she grew up here in Charlotte and after her husband's death, she continued to live here in Charlotte until her death! She was known to be a very gracious lady and much admired throughout the USA. She dedicated her life to healing the wounds of this nation and preserving the memory of her husband and all the men who lost their lives in the Civil War (North and South). She was a remarkable, much beloved woman. Her daughter died in her 20s and so she raised her grandchildren. And yes, she is buried in Lexington, VA.
And EM, your teachers got it right, LOL!! Virginia Dare . . . for newcomers - you will notice we have Dare County on the coast of NC.
