I would recommend taking a look at Salisbury as well. Technically it's not a suburb of Charlotte but it is about an hour from downtown. I'm not sure if there is demand for your business in town but your husband would probably like the fact the city plans to begin offering fiber to the home which I would think would be a big plus for him.

Salisbury is nice, I also would suggest looking at the old/downtown part of Concord. The part of Concord I'm referring to is on Union St., near the intersection of Church & Corban. It's not huge but there are shops, cafes, restaurants, library, etc. and beautiful older homes. The rest of Concord is mostly newer subdivisions and big box stores, but may be a good area to set up a practice and is a very quick drive to the UNCC area of Charlotte that is more "built up."

You didn't specify a price range but if it's in the 250k to 450k range, I would also check out McAdenville Village (another one of Saussy Burbank's communities). The model home is available for rent now that the current phase is nearly built out. Though there is one restaurant within walking distance, the better ones are within just a 5 minute drive. One can drive from McA to the heart of Uptown in 30 minutes even during rush hour. Much of the South Fork Riverfront through McA and other townships has been or is in the process of being donated to the Catawba Lands Conservancy. Plans for a greenway along this river through McA and other townships are expected and a blueway with canoe/kayak launches at multiple points is already there. The area in general (i.e. the old townships of Belmont, Mt. Holly, McAdenville and Cramerton), on the easternmost part of Gaston County bordering Mecklenburg County, are transitioning into quaint historic communities and beginning to attract an increasing number of professionals. If you're looking for quaint and small just outside Charlotte, McA and the other townships comprising the so-called Montcross area should be on your list.

The answer would be "all the above" until I look at the occupations. I think Salisbury would be your best choice to try and make a living in the specified town. I am curious as to your choice since you have probably already been through. Matthews would be second and Monroe third. In my opinion, Davidson, Waxhaw, Mint Hill, etc, would be too small to support your chosen fields of work.
