Hi all---
I am currently living in S. Florida , but am originally from NC/VA. I have actually lived all over the east coast and Europe, too. (I shared that just to illustrate that I have experienced a lot of different cultures and nationalities.) My husband and I hope to move to NC w/in the next year.
This may sound silly, but after living in South Florida, I honestly think I have developed some sort of anxiety about...PEOPLE FROM NY/NJ. I won't rant on the topic, because my intent is not to insult.
I miss, need and crave an infusion of the REAL SOUTH and its wonderful people. Is this still possible to find in the Charlotte area? Which 'burbs would any of you recommend?
You'll know me when I move up. I'll be the woman weeping with joy and hugging everyone who has a southern accent.
I'm from Jersey and I lived in New York for awhile. Everything that everybody says about Joiseyites, New Yawkers, and southerners is true. Nobody likes an outsider, and a lot of people look down on people from different classes. They fear anybody different.
When we first moved here, we drove our good car down as well as the beater we drove when it snowed. It looked like it had been through a war. We kept the car for about a year after we moved from Charlotte. I remember going to SouthPark and parking the beater next to a woman who had just pulled her caddy into a parking space. I thought she was going to pass out when she saw my '81 Nova. She got back into her car and parked it somewhere else! Nobody does that when my wife pulls her Lexus into a spot. Ain't that funny?
As far as Joiseyites and New Yawkers not being friendly, it may be generally true about people who commute to the city or live in high-crime cities (like Charlotte looked like it was heading a few years ago). Anybody who relocates from back east really shouldn't put on airs because we're not all from the Hamptons. Most of us should be lucky that we have jobs because a lot of us bailed out of high tax areas and/or crumbling industries.
As far as Charlotteans being friendlier, I don't think so. I work with the public every day, and I ask where people are from. There aren't too many Charlotteans left here, but I have found a high concentration of them in Meyers Park where the old money is. Guess what? They act like their armpits don't stink either.
So there you got it. Charlotteans don't like New Yawkers and Joiseyites. Northeasterners don't like Carolineans.
The one thing that everybody here seems to agree on is that NOBODY likes Californians and bankers no matter where they're from.
Many people say they move here to escape the rudeness, traffic, and attitudes from where they were up north. Are you really escaping it by moving where every reason you wanted to leave has beat you here already?
This sadly, is true...
Fortunately, I agree with Sunny in his recommendation of Gastonia. To this I add: Kings Mtn, Shelby, Denver, and Clover (SC).
The poster wants southern accents. Hickory is a better bet for that.
Not sure if I'd call Hickory really the Charlotte area though. Although also not sure why they want to be in the Charlotte area anyway, as if they need to go to Charlotte for anything they'll probably run into those dreaded NY/NJ'ers.

Well, I've run into people from Hickory who commute to Charlotte, in Gastonia. I hear more southern accents in Hickory & Gaffney than Gastonia & Kings Mountain. What's the ratio of southern accents in Monroe?
