With all the upcoming cutbacks here in Union County it looks like it is time to start considering Private School. The class sizes look like they are going to be getting very large.

I am looking at these two right now for my 3 chiildren. I would so appreciate any opinions on them if you have any. Thanks a bunch!

Both have great reputations However, I can say from personal experience that Charlotte Christian School was a phenomenal, exceptional place for my child, who, thanks in large part to CCS, has succeeded beyond my imagination in his first year of college

I am a graduate of Charlotte Christian, and these years later am proud to have my children attend the same.
We could not be more thrilled with all aspects of the school.

With that being said, I also know some staffers at Carmel Christian, and have known the current headmaster for over 30 years.
They run a great school.

One of the main differences is that Carmel Christian is a church run school (Carmel Baptist) while Charlotte Christian is very much non-denominational.

You really cannot go wrong, just depends on what you are looking for.

Robin, we have same concerns coming from Union Co. We are most likely placing our child at Weddington Christian. It's not a knock on the Union schools, we just feel he will do better in a smaller class.

I would like to send him to one of the schools you mentioned but, the commute is a half hr minumum. Also, the tuition for Charlotte is more than I'm ready to dish out. Carmel's tuition seemed fair compared to to the other private schools and I like how it goes to the 8th grade as compared to Weddington only going to 5th.

Make sure that the schools really do have small classrooms b/c i've heard from friends that many of the private schools have cut back also and have bigger classrooms.

What is the typical class size in UC schools?
Teacher + full time assistant or teacher only?

Right now the classes are around 22 (average) w/ 1 Teacher and a shared assistant. From what I understand next year they could reach 27 w/ only 1 Teacher!!

I read in paper this week that UC would be increasing class ave. 2-3 kids per classroom.

"The N.C. House of Representatives has proposed an increase in class size of two additional students that could potentially cost UCPS 180 teaching positions. Davis, a director with the N.C. School Superintendents Association, met with Gov. Bev Perdue on May 25 and was told by the governor that class size might increase by three students, increasing the number of cuts to an additional 85 positions. In addition, the House has proposed eliminating all third-grade teaching assistants."
