Here's my problem: I am having a onesie embroidered for my friend's new baby. I went to one of those stands in the mall to have it embroidered and it has a scratchy backing that sticks out and would not be comfortable for a baby's skin. I'm hoping I can find a place that wouldn't put that backing on, but I don't know if it's necessary for embroidery either. Someone suggested the place in Blakeney next to Swoozies. Anyone familiar, or know of a place I can have it done without the scratchy stuff? TIA!
I had an embroidery nightmare in December and EmbroidMe on Johnston Rd near the Lowes Foods helped me out for the second part of fixing the nightmare. He wouldn't take the embroidery out so I had a friend do it....
Embroidery has to be done with a stabilizer. They usually are made of paper that is a tear-away or a cut-away. On top of towels, they also add a wash-away stabilizer without which the towel's loops would cover the stitches and make it look irregular. I don't know of any embroiderer who would, can or should machine embroider without a stabilizer. The design would pucker, the stitches would get messed up, and for the most part the thread would break while embroidering. Bring the onesie to an embroidery shop and ask them if they can do it without the kind that is on that one. Otherwise, if it's a tear away, they wash off in the laundry. You could also try picking them off...they should come off with no damage to the stitching.
thank you bitbit, that's the info I was looking for. I didn't think it could be done without the backing, but I also know it would irritate a baby's skin. I'll look into the embroidme place Jake recommended. Thanks to you both!

I worked in an embroidery shop on the machines and I totally agree. Once you wash the onzie, the backing should get softer.
Go to Hometown Threads in Matthews (inside the super Walmart at Monroe Rd/Sardis Rd. North) they're awesome and very fast!
