recommend your gym
i need to join a gym. i used to go to Peak Fitness and loved it, but i'm nervous about rejoining b/c it seems like they've been closing locations and even filed for bankruptcy - Peak Fitness closes another location :: WRAL.com
so what other options are there? i know the YMCA is a good option, but it seems really expensive. i know i could get a full year at Peak for around $250.

Peak Fitness...has terrible issues w/ the BBB. I HIGHLY recommend any of the local Y's...they are fabulous!!!

i've used Peak for 5 years with no problems.
The particular location I visit just got acquired two weeks ago by another gym... they are honoring my previous agreement. No problem.

I like the Y because it is in my office building (Gateway Village) and is hardly ever crowded. Also, because of where it is there aren't rambunctious kids running around or any muscle bound steroid heads either.
I guess a lot of it depends on what you want out of the gym. I don't have kids but I know the Y has a lot of programs for those that do.

I like Energy Sports and Fitness. It all depends on what side of town and how far you are willing to travel.

Over the years I have belonged to Bally's, Peak, Golds, Anytime Fitness and the YMCA. Out of all of these I would say the Y has been the best and the ones in Charlotte are very good quality. Granted for a single person over 30 it can get pricey. Though, if you take advantage of all of their facilities and classes they offer it really is a good value. If all you want to do is pump iron, then Bally's and Peak should be good enough if they are close to you.

I was a member at Gold's Gym, now Peak Fitness on Hwy 51. I haven't been in a couple years though.

I belong to the Y but just joined Lifestyle Fitness in Matthews for their Body Pump classes. Obviously, I can't continue to belong to both, but I do like the fact that the Y has an outdoor pool.

Another vote for the YMCA! I joined the Morrison one last week, and I've been to 2 classes so far, the athletic training ones (the boot camp ones). OMG they are really good! I really get a workout and feel every muscle aching later . It is very busy in the mornings but I still manage to do what I want, exercise-wise.
