Hickory to Charlotte commute depends on where you live. The mimimm time would at least an hour I guess. I'm not trying to convince you to live in Hickory but I'm trying to give you an accurate picture of the area.

This is what I was trying to say yesterday but for some reason my brain wasn't working, LOL. Hickory is most urban/suburban in that area. It is the largest city in the metro. If you can really don't think you can live in Hickory your going to have to commute more than 45 minutes to get to a more suburban area. The exception probably being Moorseville.
From Hickory you can get to Gastonia in less than an hour. It is very comparable to Moorseville. I haven't spent a lot of time in Hickory but I think it has the same stores and chain restaurants that are found in Moorseville and Gastonia. Moorseville (IIRC) does not have a true mall. The mall in Hickory seems similar to Gastonia's mall. It may be a little bigger. Valley Hills Mall - Hickory Eastridge Mall - Gastonia. If you need an upscale mall you can make a day trip to Southpark in Charlotte. If you like big malls head to Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem. It is the largest mall in the state. At one time it was the largest in the Southeast but I don't know if that's still true. It's much better than (IMO overrated) Concord Mills.
2007 populations - Hickory - 40,985. Moorseville - 21,708. Gastonia - 71,059.
ETA: oops thanks ani!

Actually, Newton is the county seat of Catawba County, but the district court building is in Hickory. Register of Deeds, etc is in Newton.
Until we know whether you are gonna rent/buy . . . there is no way to get into much of a discussion, b/c if you must rent, this is gonna limit where you can move within that whole region.

I am really thankful to everyone for your inputs. I am presently in centerville, Ohio and they have very good schools, also a lot of fun things to do there(Kids at top) for my kids where their do lots of activities, the mall is also not far from my house,I have kumon and sylvan very close to my house, I hate to leave centerville but I am sick and tired of the cold during winter,I intend to at least rent for a year before I buy . I really love the job I got in hickory and I look forward to moving to NC soon. Thanks everyone!

I forgot, the schools in my area at centerville with zipcode 45458 are all(elementary, middle, high schools) rated "10 "on "Greatschools.net", so you can see the reason why I am particular about excellent schools, more inputs about areas with comparable schools in hickory or around will be appreciated.

Congrats on your new job, btw!
Actually, I think you would be very surprised at how good the schools are in the Hickory region. I prefer the county school system but I am biased.
There is plenty of shopping in Hickory - and even if you live in the NW section of Hickory, nothing it too far away. Also, Lenoir-Rhyne College has a lot of events open to the public (speakers, plays, etc).
The city also has a really nice Science Center that kids enjoy, as well as the Western Piedmont Symphony. There are also a lot of appealing outdoor parks, some along the lake.
I just wouldn't rule it out. There is a lot more to Hickory than a perfunctory tour reveals.
