About a couple of months ago I noticed that the tree in our frontward developed a "hole" in it's trunk. I'm not sure what caused it but I'm guessing maybe it was stress from the drought? In any case, I foolishly tried to address the problem by Googling and discovered some advice about picking up the tree bark that had fallen off and taping back to the tree. Well, I tried that about two months ago and I fear that I made the problem worse. I just removed the tape this morning when I noticed the damage might be worse and wasn't sure if it was rotting.

I think you need to call a tree expert if you don't want to lose the tree. There is a disease called scaley bark, but I don't know if that's what you have. and I agree it's a maple most likely.

That tree wont make it past the first snow or hard wind. IT will snap at the soft spot.
