About a couple of months ago I noticed that the tree in our frontward developed a "hole" in it's trunk. I'm not sure what caused it but I'm guessing maybe it was stress from the drought? In any case, I foolishly tried to address the problem by Googling and discovered some advice about picking up the tree bark that had fallen off and taping back to the tree. Well, I tried that about two months ago and I fear that I made the problem worse. I just removed the tape this morning when I noticed the damage might be worse and wasn't sure if it was rotting.

I've attached some pictures of the tree and damaged trunk and was wondering, do you have any ideas on how to best fix the damage?

BTW, the tree is about 4 years old but I'm not sure what type of tree it is.

I think you need to call a tree expert if you don't want to lose the tree. There is a disease called scaley bark, but I don't know if that's what you have. and I agree it's a maple most likely.

Either look in the yellow pages under "tree care" or something like that, for an arborist who is certified, licensed and bonded, and has the BBB symbol in the ad. If you can't find one with the symbol, write down several phone numbers of companies that look good and call the BBB. All you need is the phone number b/c it's an automated service - you enter the phone number and they read you a report. It's free.

Good luck with your tree!

See this is a older post.

Just happened to stumble on this topic searching something else tree related.

Go and Google these two keywords

sunburn + sunscald

You could add + trees to that too.

Good chance its due to a winter damage on sunny days with a fast drop in night temperature. Or, possibly sunburn that happened there, or occured in the nursery before it was bought. Because that damage takes a while to show up. It's not like seeing sunburned skin at the end of a day.

This is my trade, and that's a couple of my guesses.

Well, you could be like the people who lived at my house before me and pour concrete into it.

That tree wont make it past the first snow or hard wind. IT will snap at the soft spot.
