Another kids' sports question...
Since that's a popular topic today....I'm wondering if all of the kids out in Union County (elementary and MS) play sports primarily through the schools or are there "leagues" to call and sign them up? Specifically, I have a 6-year-old who really wants to play soccer for the first time and my MS son usually plays football and basketball. He has always played for his school....is that how it works here too? Maybe sounds like a silly question....but in Florida there were a ton of private leagues to join. And last but not least...where in UC do you all send your little girls for gymnastics and horse-riding lessons?
Ok...I think that about covers an entire year of social sporting activities for my children. As always....your help is greatly appreciated!!!

Leagues
There are both school teams and leagues. As you might imagine, with the school overcrowding, everyone will not be able to make the school teams.
My oldest played league soccer from the time he was six until he graduated high school. We started with Recreation league, then Challenge, then Classic travel team, etc. He also played on the school team in high school, but honestly had better quality of play on the travel teams.
Almost every community has a recreation league. If you let us know which what area, I'm sure we can come up with some weblinks for you. This link for Union County Soccer Association might get you started:
Union County Soccer Association

There are plenty of horse stables around Union County, too, so I'm sure lesson will be easy to find. Tell us where you are located and we'll give you some close by suggestions. An interesting horseback group in the Marvin community is:
Shea Rose Vaulters

The do gymnastics on horseback!
Gymnastics are very popular in the area, also. As are dance studios, cheerleading leagues, basketball leagues, etc. If a kid can do it, you can probably find it here. Our Girl Scouts recently took a class in fencing in Indian Trail.

We're in Wesley Chapel too. Both my younger kids play soccer with Wesley Chapel Weddington Athletic Assoc. wcwaa.org. It's a great league! We've had fantastic coaches, the kids love it. The practice fields are across from Harris Teeter on Weddington Road, so it's really convenient too.

There are all kinds of legues here.
My boys play golf, so I am not too up on the leagues.
There are also a lot of churches that offer league type sports. SOAR is part of Christ Covenent and ROCsports.org is part of Carmel Baptist. They both offer a variety of sports in a less competative environment.

you know, I see this as a good thing....I remember when I was a kid, younger kids didn't do much in the way of sports. It wasnt' until we were Jr. High and ASKED to do sports that we did them.
I see so many parents really pushing their kids into things even if the child isn't that "into" it.
As I said earlier, my boys are into golf. I am more than fine with only one sport and one that they love. The great thing about golf is that it is a sport they can do for a lifetime.
There may come a time down the road when they show more interest in other sports and we will let them do that down the road.

Hey, Dawn. Where do your boys golf? This is another sport that my son loves. He played at a private club back home, but we aren't planning to join one here. Any tips?? Thanks.
