You are right - Asheville to Johnson city is nothing, no big deal. But again, I was talking about I40 from Asheville toward Knoxville - THAT is the scariest interstate driving in NC

Driven that one, too. On the way back from Asheville when in a hurry.

Chicago, so glad that you made it!! As a fellow mountain-hater, I can certainly appreciate your angst.
I have to tell you, I was a passenger in a van going through some very steep mountains in China; two lane roads that would make OUR two lane roads weep. Plus, the penchant for drivers to pass one another even if it is on a blind curve. I managed to get through the whole thing with a minimum of anxiety (by the grace of God).
Subsequent trips to the city will become easier as Orangish said. Glad that you are safe & sound, however...don't have to worry about going back anytime real soon....

I did the I-40 from Asheville to Charlotte area. I'm not sure, but I'm certain I've never been so afraid!
Although my husband was driving, I think I had "my brake" on the whole time. Very very scary drive.
We did I 77 on the way home and it was much tamer. Longer mountain time, but not nearly as scary!

Ya, mountain trips in other countries are ridiculous. We drove through some in Greece that make these look like a joke. Especially when you see all the reamins of wrecked cars at the bottom of the valley.

It's not highway, but just for fun let's all drive up to Highlands, NC from Franklin, on NC 64. No shoulders, sheer drop on your passengers side as you climb the mountain, the mountain (rock outcroppings) on your right as you descend. Hairpin turns, switchbacks, and gorgeous scenery and waterfalls.
No trucks allowed as they cannot negotiate the curves where the mountain sticks out into the road. But some try and then the road has to get shut down as they are escorted down, taking up both lanes.
And a combo of tourists who want to slowly drive and gawk, and workers who have to get up the mountain to get to their jobs. Heh heh. That was me, I drove up every evening at 7pm for a job at an auction house and down at midnight when we closed. Get outta the way, I'm late for work! Amazing to drive down at midnight in the fog, with windows open to hear all the night sounds.

Yep. not a fan of mountains. I think that I have now progressed back to the "tolerate them" status of years ago since the trip to China and seeing the Great Wall.
Born & raised a flatlander and am very happy to see miles and miles of land with nothing blocking the view!!

I LOVE this drive. It's especially beautiful late at night when there's not much traffic, and the "land stars" stretch out in the valley as far as you can see... Really an experience.
