CYN - it is terribly distressing. I grew up taking in stray cats, as did my neighbors. And some neighbors even fed feral cats that would not come near them but would eat the food they put out.
I just don't think it is on the forefront of people's minds. There are so many abandoned animals here - the shelters are over run - and that gets the most "coverage" - even tho funds are surely not pouring into the shelters, either. It is sickening how people abandon their animals. Of course, I realize, there can be extenuating circumstances. But often, people simply have not bothered to get their animals neutered/spayed and then dump the litters out somewhere, if not at the shelters.
I know some counties have Humane Society chapters, and their members are usually the ones offering the traps. Have you checked to see if there is a Humane Society chapter in your area? That is where I would start. They would love to have your volunteer help!!! And if you can't work that out, then I know they would appreciate any other help you can give them. You could be key in a fundraiser by suggesting that one of the NASCAR drivers make this a cause! You never know what might happen if you get involved and pass this idea along (an excellent idea, BTW!)
As you know, my son rescued a feral kitten this past winter . . . and he is now my sweet kitty. It took my son over four hours to capture the little fellah . . . in the rain! It snowed the next day (Boone area) and my son was never able to capture my kitty's litter mate, so we assume he died at some point after that. Momma had evidently been killed. It is a cruel world. And hard to believe that the homeowners where our mountain house is located put out anti-freeze to PURPOSELY kill the feral cats that live in the woods and come up to the houses. That's what kind of terrific people they are. Our son was told by property management that they find dead cats frequently - poisoned by home owners. Unbelievable.
