Default Why the panic?

Sorry but I'm just not seeing the reason(s). Things are bad overall with the economy, yes. People are watching their pennies. Jobs are not plentiful.

But people are still buying houses here. I bought mine 3 weeks ago, and in my neighborhood street alone there have been already 2 other house closings with new families, as well as another under contract just 2 houses down.

People are still shopping and restaurants are still in business. Yes, some have gone out of business here in Charlotte, but guess what: they've gone out of business ALL over the country.

I think people are looking at this issue the wrong way. There are still very good reasons to move to Charlotte or to any new place for that matter. There are probably a few places one should not move to, but in my opinion this is not one of them.

The economy is tough everywhere in the US (and world) right now. Some places are worse off and some places are better off. From what I can tell, Charlotte is somewhere in the middle. It is NOT a utopia or the promised land (but was it before, really??) to rush over and move to without having a plan or a job or money, but neither is it a dead or dying region, where people are leaving left and right and businesses are abandoning.

We can ride this out

Exactly! Why worry, we only have 3.5 years to go! Cash in those 401ks now!

That cracks me up - the ancient Myans were building some big ol stone calendars, they ran out out of rocks, now some people are going nuts over that.

As I drive around...walk around...or bike I start to get a little more scared each day. I see SO many houses being deserted...foreclosure signs up...the real estate listings in Union County are mind boggling. Tough times are ahead...and when the dollar collapses...scary times. We are going to start investing in Gold. I have some Trader friends who have been watching China closely as they are buying up Commodoties like crazy...it seems they are getting ready as well...as most Americans still have their heads in the sand.

I read those Left Behind books. If the Rapture really happens I will probably be one of those left here but that will give me 7 more years to repent. I will be the world's biggest believer if that many people disappear in the blink of an eye.

But by the same token, in our neighborhood they are finishing completion this month on 10 new townhouse units which were all sold as of a couple of months ago. And people are still buying houses, but many sellers are getting the short end of the stick (its a buyers' market) so it is not like everyone is losing their houses and tent cities are popping up all over the state.

Tough times are kind of here already...they may get tougher, but we'll eventually bounce back. I don't think the US dollar will completely collapse and, while it makes sense to re-evaluate investments and the like, I think some people are simply starting to panic a little too much.

As for stocking up on ammo and supplies - we're good on that front, I still have my bomb shelter fully loaded from when I stocked up for Y2K

We should pick out a bar where those of us left behind can meet up for a drink afterwards.
