Well Kings mountain is not to far I would assume you mean something like Blowing Rock etc. I would say up to 3 hours depending on how fast you drive and potty breaks

Not to dispute the time frame that CA has quoted (as I have never driven from Huntersville, NC to Blowing Rock, NC) but I can get from Tega Cay, SC to Blowing Rock in exactly 2 hours (not going over the speed limit - with no potty breaks...those are not allowed ). That is taking the 77 to the 485, to the 85, and then on up 321 (say that 10 times fast).
Blowing Rock is a neat little town to walk around in (quaint little shops and eateries). If you are looking for a place to get pretty good Q while your there..check out The Woodlands Barbeque (doesn't look like much from the outside but it sure is yummy)

I live in Huntersville: Two hours max. I can get to Asheville in two hours, Boone in under two hours, etc. Now, if you are going to the TN side of the Smokies then you might be 3 hours.
For frame of reference:
Boone is only 104 miles taking 77 N to 421 W.
Asheville is 133 miles taking 77 to 40 to 240.
So that gives you an idea, but it all depends which area you'd like to see! The mtns are so expansive, and so beautiful, with a ton of towns!
I personally agree with PP that Blowing Rock is great. I like Asheville too. I've been to little places like Bat Cave and Little Switzerland for fun and hiking.
I bet lovesmountains would have some advice on places to see!

Dennise, please clarify - do you wish to just see mountains and take a leisurely drive, or do you want to visit some tourist type mountain town?

Lake Lure/Chimney Rock/Bat Cave
If you're just driving through, I had a great time driving through Lake Lure, Chimney Rock and Bat Cave. Was picking my daughter up from girl scout camp at Camp Occaneechee (next door) and decide to have lunch in Chimney Rock. Fun little restaurants with decks overlooking the stream. Looks like a great place to come back to and spend a little time, but we enjoyed just spending a couple of hours there!
