Default Difference between living in Mecklenburg and Union county

I am thinking about buy a new house in Union county but wondering what is the difference comparing with living in Mecklenburg. Property tax and schools are 'good' things. Besides that, is there any 'bad' difference? Thanks!

IMO, one of the "bad" differences is being further away from the city. From what I have seen of UC, it is more rural.

The difference is about $2000 a year in property taxes.
Oh, and your kid will graduate high school and actually know how to read.

idiotic comment, to say the least. But thanks uber bwnage for chiming in. BTW, how many years of Union Co. schooling did it take to help you come up with that awesome handle? Did you make it up yourself or get the idea from your Magic: The Gathering friends?

Which one is you?

Native Son...that's awesome!

To the OP you also have to figure in where you will be working (unless you work from home). Yes if you live in Union County you may save 2000 a year in taxes as another poster stated. However if you work close in to CLT you also have to consider how much you are paying in gas for your hour long commute back home everyday. Also how much maintenance on your car do you need for commuting? What is your time worth? Is spending the time commuting everyday worth the savings in taxes? IMO it is not. The difference for me is location. Union County is way too far out for me to ever consider living there. BTW I never went to Union County Schools but as a CLT native I am a former student of CMS. I can read and write just fine. Some people think I can even form complete sentences....

if i was you , i would not chance buyng a house in union county at this time, even less if this brand new house is in a new development.
real estate will take a much longer time to bounce back there than in mecklenburg.

I would be careful buying a new home in an largely unfinished development ANYWHERE. I would advise looking at re-sales and what is in inventory, in neighborhoods that have either been completely built or nearly finished. Too many developers are changing restrictions (lowering them) in unfinished developments.

Union County will necessarily have to raise taxes at some point, just like other counties, so just b/c taxes are lower now, that should not be the basis for making a decision about where to live.

Choose a neighborhood in a school district you like, whether it is in Meck or UC.

I think the consideration about commuting is valid, but that is just something one has to weigh out w/ other considerations.

There are many terrific neighborhoods in UC. I would just take it on an individual basis, make sure I knew what the development is all about (amenities complete? few lots left to build on?) and take it from there. Factor in schools, what amenities are in the development, what shopping is nearby - no matter where the property is located.

I have always thought that Union County has offered us the best of both worlds...Saturday Morning horseback riding lessons and Cane Creek Park with the kids...while Husband and I have a date night in Mecklenburg County and all the great things it also has to offer!

Oh and Native_Son? Might wanna clean up after yourself after you make d-bag comments like that in response to a not-too-far-from-the-truth comments from people like "uber_bwnage". You're dripping douche juice all over the thread...
