We have to decide over the weekend whether we would prefer to accept a job offer in Raleigh or in Charlotte. The money is about equal, so we don't know how to choose.

The most important things to us are (roughly in order): quality schools, a vibrant Unitarian church, access to health food stores, vegetarian-friendliness, a liberal/progressive bent, reasonable traffic, good shopping, lots of things to do, quality construction, and a pleasant climate.

Given that, anyone care to say which city is a better match? Thanks!

Wow the weekend is almost over. There are many threads on here comparing the two cities. I would hit the search button if I was you and enter in Charlotte V's Raleigh and see what you come up with.

I think both cities have a lot to offer it is just a matter of preference.

Good Luck I hope everything works out for you!

Think about what you want then, external from your job. Raleigh probably has better night life and more restaurants and is closer to the beach. Plus it's larger in that you have the Durham-Cary-Chapel Hill scenario going on. It will be flatter by the terrain.
Charlotte has alot of banks and bankers. It's closer to the mountains and has more outdoorsey things closer by. Plus you are closer to the historic town of Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountain Park. With Charlotte you are closer to High Point and Hickory where much furniture is made as well as other crafts. Neither is really a bad choice if you ask me. I would think the real estate in Charlotte might be a tad cheaper. But again, what you do want to do with your days off?

Probably Raleigh for your situation.

The Charlotte area is a little more affordable, has more to do. But the Raleigh area's schools are a little better overall, and overall lower crime rate. It's also a little a little more liberal, though I personally like the mix (conservative/liberal/moderate) in the Charlotte area better. But I think you wouldn't have a problem finding your nich in either place. Both areas have their fraffic issues, have good weather, and strong economies. Good luck in yoyr search!!

If the pay is about the same, I'd go with Charlotte. Raleigh is more expensive all the way around, and real estate is higher.
I think Raleigh is more progressive in some areas, so if having a more liberal/progressive bent is important, you might like Raleigh better.
