I discovered when I looked at my tax record for my home that I am have been paying taxes on a car port that I removed 10 years ago. In its place I built a garage and am also being taxed on the value of the garage. What the hell? They knew TO ADD THE GARAGE BUT DIDNT REMOVE THE CAR PORT from my tax list... Anyone with an idea of the best way to fix this? In fact I think I should be given a refund. They have taxed me for something that does not exist.

Oh dear. I have been thru/ this in two different states (incorrect info on tax listing) and it is hard to get anyone to help you. And the chances of a refund . . . unlikely. Maybe the best route would be a credit towards your next tax bill (just a thought).

You are gonna have to call the tax office and find out what the procedure is. You will doubtless get someone who doesn't really have the faintest and tells everyone the same thing - that you will have to fill out forms, blah blah. You would probably have more success going in person.

Maybe someone will step up and help you and fix it w/o a hassle. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I figured trying to reach a human on the phone might be hard but I will call and ask for the forms.

Nothing has changed about the house. They have listed the carport and my building permit which I had to have approved showing where the new garage would be showed clearly that it was to occupy the same spot. They screwed up because when they added the NEW TAX increase due to the garage they should have seen the carport was GONE. thanks

What would happen if you simply deducted the tax on the carport? How long would it take to get a response from an agency dealing with this?
In other words, let them reach out to you and see if you can get it resolved.

Actually, I have been pleasantly suprised the past few times I have had issues with Mecklenburg County taxes. I emailed them and got a thoughtful and correct response from them within 24 hours and also the phone number of the guy who reviewed my case.

Try their online support ticket system.
