[SIZE=2]I am staying in a rental on the S.C. side of Lake Wylie. I will be fishing at the property and on a rented pontoon boat. I planned on buying a S.C. fishing license but if I dock and fish from shore on the N.C. side is that illegal?[/SIZE]

The way the NC law works says you need no licence to fish inTHE COUNTY IN WHICH YOU ARE A LEGAL RESIDENT IF YOU USE LIVE/NATURAL BAIT..no LURES ETC. You will have to be able to show where you live like a nc drivers licence
I have had to show my NC licence when in my boat on the NC side. I wouldnt buy one for both states unless I planned to do plenty of fishing all over the place.
If you are 'staying' in a rental in SC, then you will need to purchase a NC non-resident license, whether you are in your boat in NC or fishing from a dock or shore is irrelevant. As already pointed out a non-resident license at $30 is a lot cheaper than learning the hard way for $160. If you still have questions, the phone number to call NCWRC is 888-248-6834. Good to know! I just bought a $15 annual license but I am just going to be fishing in Mecklenburg. But now my BF won't have to pay for one. We wouldn't even keep the fish, we are stictly catch and release. We went to Latta Plantation last weekend but didn't catch a thing. Has anyone had any luck there? No one I talked to.
God forbid they don't get their $30 for crossing your boat over an imaginary line.
Not only imaginary, but there is disagreement on where it is even supposed to be located. When they built Lake Wylie over a century ago, the rising waters submerged a stone obelisk that was placed there over a century before that which was used to mark the boundary between the two states. Without this reference, there is no way to know where the original line went when the states were formed centuries ago.
Supposedly they sent down divers a few years ago, but they can't find it.
If you fish in Lake Wylie, best that you get a license for both states.
