Raptor Center, Carowinds, Discovery Place, the children's library in uptown, tour of Lowe's Motor Speedway (includes a couple of laps around the track). I forget what that animal park is called that everyone talks about, the one with the attacking Emu's.
Sports Connection and Dave and Busters are great too..for bowling, laser tag, video games. A friend of ours went to Great Wolf and said it wasn't worth the money spent. I don't know anyone else that has been though. Kids enjoy riding the Lynx. There is a great Fuel Pizza place downtown.
Discovery place is supposed to have a pirate shipwreck exhibit, we took a ride to columbia last week 1.5 hours to Riverbanks zoo. I had a 3, 6 8 9 10 and 11 yr old with me, and they all loved it, especially they have an exhibit where you feed tropical birds nectar. they land all over you . really cool
Depending on how active he is, he might like the Whitewater Center. I've found Imaginon to be not-so-great for most boys his age, but he might like a walk-through there, and if he needs some sit-down time, they do have some neat computer programs. They may have a play or some other show going on there in the theater.
It can be a neat trip to park somewhere down the Lynx line (http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/CATS/LYNX/home.htm - broken link), take Lynx into downtown to the end, hit the light-up-and-make-a-funny-noise sides of the Seventh Street Station building that houses Reid's, go to Imaginon and Discovery Place (http://www.discoveryplace.org/home/discovery_place-home.php - broken link), and grab a snack at Reid's or Fuel Pizza, or take the Lynx one stop back out to The EpiCentre for lunch at 5 Guys. These are all an easy walk.
If he's a kid that appreciates art, and has the patience for it, there's also the Mint Museum of Craft + Design downtown, also an easy walk from the Seventh Street Station. Unfortunately, they don't have a separate link for the museum downtown - I'm talking about the one on N. Tryon Street!
The EpiCentre also has a movie theater and bowling lanes - in the evenings, these are more adult-oriented (no one under 21 in the theater after 7), but during the day, I've taken my sons there. They love ordering pizza at a movie theater!
Concord Mills has the NASCAR Speedpark, with putt putt, and bumper boats. The Duke Energy Explorium is really neat (and free...at least it use to be), great place for a nice picnic lunch right on the water too. Check out at Charlotte Knights game in SC (just over the border), about 30 minutes away. Have fun!!!
Dan Nicholas Park DanNicholasPark.org, Salisbury, NC - Your Best Entertainment Bargain! is awesome, too. It's not too far from the Great Wolf Lodge. Playgrounds, paddle boats, carousel, mini train (although he may be too old for that). I second riding the Lynx. You can stop at Pike's Soda Shop for a milkshake!
Enjoy your visit!
