Can someone help me with this issue? my NC driver license will expire in early August, but I'm currently in Alabama and can't be back to NC until Mid-august, is there any grace period in NC for the driver license renewal?

You might be able to renew it on-line. If you don't its probably like Va. If you let it expire, you will not only be penalized but will have to provide social security AND birth certificate. Look up DMV and see if you can avoid the BS

You can't renew an NC drivers license online. You go to the DMV & take an eye test, tell them what a bunch of street signs are & now I think they mail your new one to you at your NC address.

Hi. I just did it. You have to take the vision test and the road signs every time that you renew. I called and asked them the same thing, and they said you have to do it by the exp. date.

but I can't get back to NC by the exp.date definitely, what can I do now? Would I be in trouble at DMV with an expired driver license? any suggestions?

Contact the Division of Dictatorship and ask them for an extension.
Isn't it funny all of this is supposedly for our own security but they MAIL it to you HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA and if you're driving a legal car but are an illegal you probably wont be stopped because of racial profiling. HA HA HA HA HA HA. Have fun attempting to abide by the law and be a good citizen.

You do have to go into the DMV to get a new license. As a minimum you have to take the eye and sign test. However at the discretion of the examiner, they can require you to take both the written and road tests before they will renew the license. A lot of times this will depend on what you have on your record. Lots of tickets and you might be taking the real test again.
If you let your NC license expire, then I think you will be treated as a new applicant when you do head there to get a new license. This does mean a written test, and again maybe require a road test at the discretion of the examiner.
On the earlier comment about mailing the license, they don't do that. If you get a new license they make it there while you wait. Only takes them a few minutes after they take your photo.
