Howdy, all. Are there any rules against working at home in Charlotte?

Secondly, we have a small Internet company. Do I assume correctly that TimeWarner cable/Internet/phone covers the Charlotte area? Are there other ISPs for the area?

Thanks so much for any input.

Not sure what you mean about "rules against working at home." I know several people down here (myself included) who work remotely from our home offices for our respective companies. I do not think anyone really cares.

Now, according to my HOA covenants, I cannot run a daycare, butcher shop, or adult bookstore (among other things) out of my house...lousy HOA rules

LOL! Okay. We'd be working for our own company, but at home. Hadn't thought about daycares, butcher shops or adult bookstores. LOL!

Thanks for your reply.

Okay. I'll have to do some research into the laws, taxes, etc. Thanks.

I work from home and my company is in another state. My HR department looked into the workers comp laws and other such regulations to make sure "they" would not lose out if I moved to NC LOL. Also I had to take out business insurance through my home insurance company. I expect tax time to be lots of fun this year as my husband works in SC and we live in NC.

I don't know about all these other options, such as daycares out of the home and such.

I Started an Internet from an Apartment in Charlotte back in 2000. I had to go to a City office to get my address "rezoned" for business. It really was not a problem at all as I remember it.

As a side note, You did not mention how your company was structured (Sole Proprietership, LLC, Partnership, S or C Corp). That choice of Structure will also play a material role in what "other" laws need to be followed. It should not play a role the residential issue.

I'd provide even more detail but I no longer live in Charlotte so I no longer have phone numbers, addresses etc.

Hope this helps.

TWC covers all of Charlotte and most of Mecklenburg county, except for the northern part which is covered by a local cable company, MI Connection. AT&T provides naked DSL and also offers U-verse in some of the city. Finally Clearwire offers WiMax based internet and phone service in Charlotte. Of course with all of them you could alternatively use something like Vonage or other 3rd party VoIP. Generally they are a lot cheaper.
