I have a 6 year old who I believe has ADHD & also some kind of learning disability (possibly dyslexia). Can anyone recommend someone in the Charlotte/Matthews/Union County area who can diagnose these problems? Like perhaps a child psychologist or developmental pediatrician?

TIA!!!!

Shayla-

Check with your school- I am not sure if you are in Meck or in Union, but they should do evaluations as a part of the school system. The links for the departments are below. I found when I was looking for who to talk to, if you call the schools they usually can point you in the right direction.

Here is the link for CMS:

Here is Union's Exceptional Children Program:
http://ec.ucps.k12.nc.us/ (broken link)

Here is also a group who deals with learning disabilities:

Some other links:
http://www.add.org/ (Attention Deficit)
http://www.chadd.org (ADHD)
http://www.ldanatl.org/ (Learning Disabilities)

You could also check with your Pediatrician for a more specific referral.

Hope this helps some, and good luck with everything!

Anita

I would contact the Fletcher School/Rankin Institute. They specialize in dyslexia, and even though it is an expensive private school for dyslexic children, these schools usually conduct evaluations of children. (I had my daughter evaluated simultaneously by a dylsexia school and a public school - the public school thought she was mildly retarded-but she is dyslexic). ADHD is often co-morbid or mistaken for dyslexia and/or a learning processing disorder. In my opinion the public schools are not going to be as good at evaluating a disorder such as dyslexia, particularly in N. Carolina, as they are one of the states that are still "behind" in dyslexia teaching methods and prognosis. I am finishing my MsEd and licensure in special ed next year.
