We have family doing the drive and since my wife and I fly here, I was wondering what a good halfway point would be. They are taking 95 to 81 so I figure maybe somewhere in Virginia. My niece is autistic so I dont think they can go straight through with her. Any suggestions, maybe kid friendly area?? Thanks.

Perhaps Winchester, VA would be a good place to stop.

Winchester, VA | Visitor Information

From Winchester to Charlotte is about 6 hours.

Harrisonburg VA is pretty close to halfway as well. We use it as such on trips to and from NYC.

Did this exact drive so many times, although it was Long island to Mooresville... Virginia is definitely the longest chunk of time (I swear VA is the biggest state ever lol), you should consider stopping and staying in the Hershey, PA area... It's less then 1/2 way, but offers tons of lodging and eating options.

Pro tip: Don't speed in Virginia.

If you are driving on a weekend.. some hotels in the northern VA u can get at a very good price.

my friend stayed at marriot in Fairfax (on FairOaksDrive).. these hotels are expensive on the weekdays becoz they are more made for corporate folks who've flown in for work reasons.. weekends its cheaper.. but looking at u are taking 81 from 95.. am not sure how much a deviation it would be.. there is a way though..

also, since you are taking 81

you can stop around at Front royal, VA.

That may add 55 miles or so to the trip. While I really like Fairfax and the areas around GMU and Fair Oaks, if time is of the essence it might not be worthwhile to meander so far from I-81.

95 doesnt run in to 81. Are they cutting over somewhere, or are they taking 95 to 85? What part of NY will they be coming from?

They are coming from Long Island so Mapquest brings them I95. They want to stay over for a day or so in Virginia and do something like a water park or something really for my niece.
