I'm gonna have to disagree.
I don't put Cotswold in the same geographic boundary that includes Ballantyne and Ardrey Kell.
If you can get to your neighborhood off of Monroe Rd., Independence or Central, seems like you are in east Charlotte. Although the oldtimers call neighborhoods off Monroe Southeast Charlotte.
I'd start South Charlotte right at Cotswold's south boundary.
No matter though... either way you slice it, it's still a great neighborhood.

Yeah, I kind of agree with you too. It also wouldn't be much of a stretch to say Cotswold is more Uptown than it is "South Charlotte". Zooming out on Google Maps can illustrate this better...

At the most you could argue Cotswold is SOUTHEAST of uptown
Look at the map you linked - anything directly to the right of uptown (where the map shows "74", is due east - Cotswold falls much further south than that).
Some of you may only think of "south Charlotte" as those areas out near Ballantyne or Ardrey Kell, but until about 12 years ago that was only "south Mecklenburg" because it was all farm land, it was certainly not south Charlotte.
South Charlotte has always been the area directly south of uptown bordered by Park Rd on the west and Monroe Rd on the east.

I didn't know I was couching the discussion in 1995 terms...
Out of curiosity Loves... Since east Charlotte starts at Independence, and south Charlotte starts at Monroe, what is the area between Monroe & Independence?
BTW, not too long ago Midtown mall was a dairy farm, maybe we should only call 2nd & 3rd ward south Charlotte for the sake of historical accuracy, lol.

I believe when you are talking about Charlotte's size, you are refering to its geographical size. There are some pretty shakey areas off of Sharon Amity Rd. towards Monroe Rd. Charlotte does tend to have good areas border bad areas. I believe that Cotswold is far enough away to say that it is pretty safe. It is a great area for convenience and places at which to walk.

Hmm' lets try the Allen Tate map (Cotswold is in Zone 4). Looks like they classify anything east of Providence Rd as Southeast Charlotte. Will give you Southeast Charlotte atleast

"south" Charlotte is a term that has existed for decades and generally referred to the area directly south of uptown. Dilworth and Myers Park were original suburbs of south Charlotte. It would be less than accurate to let newcomers think "south Charlotte" is only comprised of the area down below I485. South Charlotte now EXTENDS down to the county line but it starts south of uptown.
Both Monroe Rd and Independence have their beginnings uptown, radiating east and then southeast away from uptown. Monroe Rd is a loose border for the southeast area - anything "inside" of it is still southeast Charlotte, anything "outside" of it is the beginnings of east Charlotte.

Well isn't that something. Because since I've been here I've never heard or thought of Dilworth as 'south Charlotte'.
To this [fourth generation] native Charlottean, south Charlotte USED to mean all the new high-falutin' construction south of Fairview, centered primarily at the Arboretum. We all KNEW the names of the communities within route 4 didn't need some silly cardinal designation to know where we were supposed to live.
Y'all newcomers can call it whatever the hell you want, really. Perception is reality, after all. If you want to tell yourself that your new house off of Walker is in south Charlotte, knock yourself out. You'll probably end up selling to some transplant who won't know the difference anyway.
Me, I'll just call it Cotswold.
