Interesting that this thread got revived because I just got great news - my son was transferred to NYC and is coming home in July!! To Bryant Park, smack in the middle of Manhattan and I couldn't be happier!
You all are crazy!! LOL!!
Absolutely , positively , insane.
Gone with the wind!! Some of the preceding replies left me with abdominal pain and teary eyes!!
But , not all of the homeless/disadvantaged are 'bums'. It's too bad , due to bad apples spoiling the bunch , a broad brushstroke has been applied.
I've come across drug addicts that were aching for another hit. Really scary. Most usually are sweating and panicking while trying to ask for money to help them out. I hear the same stories: out of town, no gas, wife and child in car, no food, etc. Last week someone asked me to drive them to Greensboro!
I hate to say it but my guard is always up when I'm approached by them. Fists are usually clinched and ready to swing. I'll be ready whenever the worst case scenario does happen.
I like to put my hand in my pocket around my VW key. It is pretty long and would make a decent stabbing weapon in a pinch.

To me, a bum is anyone who comes up to me and tries to "bum" money. There are plenty of programs out there that one may take advantage of rather than begging for $1.50 on the street.

Good bye and good luck, Charlotte!
Good for him. Sorry he couldn't handle Charlotte. It's not for everybody. I couldn't imagine moving back north. I love it here. To each there own.
He actually liked Charlotte, but he's young and missed his friends and family and the part of banking he's interested in is based out of NY. He always felt it was temporary - it was me who tried to interest him in living some where besides NY.

I think Charlotte would be like a retirement community after growing up in NYC (for a young man).
Good luck to him - enjoy having your son close by.
Actually it was Giuliani who got rid of the squeegeemen! That was the ultimate in homeless agressiveness. Thank God I've never experienced ANYTHING like that down here.
