A neighbor of mine is in the millwork (cabinets and trim) field of work for mainly only new construction. As you can imagine, things have been a bit tight for him for the past many months with not much new construction going on. However, he told me yesterday that there seems to be a "mini construction boom" of sorts going on. He's now booked all week long for many weeks to come--as opposed to usually only being booked three or four days a week during "normal" times. He says the bulk of the work is around Harrisburg and the speedway (yes, more homes within earshot of the track to compain the future)...but he's hearing talk about work starting up (or back up) all across the Charlotte metro.

I know this is nothing more than neighbor talk and I don't have any fancy numbers and percentages to make a fun newsworthy prediction out of anything. But my ear to the ground tells me that there's a small rumble out there. Whether it's the herd running towards us or away remains to be seen (or if it's just indegestion). My hunch is that there's a foot on the kick start peg trying to get something moving. Let's see if folks will stay scared to death hiding in their caves, not spending; or will they realize that the stick to pull out of this dive is in our hands and all we need to do is pull back a little and not be afraid to spend (responsibly).

As much as I want this economy to turn around I will tell you that this is the "Calm before the Storm". Things are going to get soo bad this Fall that it is going to be much and I mean much worse than last Fall.

That's right. You're that guy that thinks the sky is going to drop 61 miles lower (leaving us just 1 mile to breathe in). Don't sell all your comic books and action figures yet. Things will only be as bad as you think for Jed and the gang in the upcoming Red Dawn remake.

They're remaking Red Dawn? Didn't know that. Will check it out.

Hopefully your friend's news means good news all over. I am keeping all fingers crossed!

Thanks for some hopefully good news.

Some of our builders we work with that have been dormant are starting back up again with custom builds and a few specs. It has been quiet for months and now all of a sudden some work is going on.

Not offense to your post, but it really frustrates me to hear builders building spec homes since we have so many other homes on the market and have a ton of desserted spec homes that end up foreclosed. I know the Builders need to make money, but we need to fill up some of the empty homes already out there before adding more...especially since we are not drawing people with jobs to the area right now.

Most of the specs have moved down to starter homes and there is still a demand for those.
