Should I purchase extented warranty?
Hello everyone,
I'm looking at purchasing a 2009 Nissan Altima 2.5S. The dealership offers extented warranty for 5 years or 100,000 at $1,400. Should I buy extented warranty?
Thanks for your input.

Only if you intend to keep the car for more than 5 years. I have bought one the last two cars I had and they have paid for themselves. Of course, I keep my cars until they are in really bad shape....

I agree with CC..If you plan to keep it after the 3/36, then yes..It will pay for itself if the shet hits the fan and we all know that can happen at any time...
Plus if you decide to sell it, its an incentive and you can ask more money for car with that on..

No, they are a waste of money.
Do you expect to spend $1,400 on repairs during the 5 years? If so, then you are buying a crappy car.
Extended warranties are one of the biggest money makers in the car game...don't buy into it.

If you do want one, shop around for pricing. I think you can get one at a better rate than at the dealership and financed in, which obviously winds up costing a lot more than $1400 at the end of the payoff. Also you can get one at any point before to original runs out. So I say save $25/month and pay for it outright next year.

Extended warranties are huge profits for companies. They are almost never worth the cost to consumers. I have never purchased one and never needed one.

Extended warranties are a waste of money in my opinion. I have 110k on my car which was purchased brand new and have had zero problems with it. What I do recommend though is that after the initial car break in period you should really beat on the car and I mean take it up to the redline a few times and do some peeling out and do aleast 1 burnout with the parking brake set, just run it really hard and then do it again a few months before the warranty is up. If something is to fail it will fail while its under warranty. I have known many people who have done this to their cars and they will get well over 200k on them without any major problems.

A lot of people say extended warranties are a waste, but I for one have ALWAYS purchased them and have ALWAYS been glad I did. This goes for cars and large appliances. My warranty paid for a new AC system when my car was 4 years old, as well as half a dozen minor repairs as well. Just this week the extended warranty on my washing machine paid for itself. Also, it's worth paying for a warranty if you can afford it...because you CAN put a price on peace of mind.

I've purchased two used cars and transferred the extended warranty. There was a $50 transfer fee.
As for the original question, if it were me, I'd park the money in an investment and if a repair is needed, then the money is there. If not, I'd have extra cash to blow on whatever.
(Oddly enough, when my car was still covered under extended warranty, I found myself MORE pre-occupied with little things about the car. I was concerned about utilizing the warranty and not wasting it! Now that it's no longered covered, I'm able to "close one eye" and ignore the occasional weird sound.)
