I read here somewhere that when you register your car from out of state you have to pay a tax, and then you get a property tax bill a few months later.

I understand about the tax when you register, we have something similar here in Fl. you have to pay $100.00 extra to register your vehicle from out of state. But what's this property tax bill, after registering. Do they tax you on the value of your car/cars? How do you calculate that?
Is this a yearly tax? I think I read its a road tax? Can someone please explain?

Default Car Tax

So then it would be better to come with only one car! Right now we have two cars, 2005 aveo and 2002 malibu. I never heard of a property tax on cars in other states. Just a little weird to me. But I guess there are stranger things out there that we haven't heard of either. Thank you for your response.

I dont know what we paid when we registered, dh handled that. I just paid the bill for our 2003 Pilot, the value was listed at 18,600 and the tax was 121.65. It is s a yearly bill, not super high, but we have 3 vehicles. It's good to know about before you move, it caught us by surprise.

We just got our cars done, and yes, there is something called Highway Usage Tax. It is 3% of the value of the car, up to $150. YIKES! We thought our bill at registration would be $60-70 each car....NOT over $200!

So the cost of a Drivers license was $32 for 8 years, The car tag is $28 (for my wagon- a pick-up truck like DH drives is 43.50) the title is $40 the HUT is $150. ARGH!!!

OH! And when you get your tags, the title application must be signed by a notary, who also conveniently works there, so that was another $5 per title.

THEN in 3 months, I can expect the property tax bill to come in....

NICE!!

And when you are at the DMV waiting to take the written test for your license....read the book and study the signs...that written test is HARD!

The Highway Use Tax (HUT) is a one-time tax when you register a motor vehicle. NC residents pay 3%, while newcomers are given a break and only pay $0-$150 to register their vehicle for the first time.

Most NC residents pay around $60 per year for tag renewal and auto inspection fees.

Annual motor vehicle property tax varies by county of residence and value of vehicle. Not a state tax.
