Ideas on settling a water bill after a break?
I had a break in the service to a house in Concord that ran for 10 days. The city came out and shut the water. We repaired the next day. First bill came in at $1600 +. We negotiated down to $650. They say it's a final bill due next week.
How do they determine what the charge of water and sewer could be when there has been no prior use for water in this house for quite some time?
TIA for any information.

I was wondering the same thing. We just put in a sprinkler system. I did not want one installed for this very reason. After reading on here all of the problems I am convinced we should not have installed it. How can I catch a leak early enough not to get caught with a ridiculous bill.

I think that once you have repaired the leak, show evidence of that (along with evidence of the "before" bill) that the water co. eliminates the outrageous bill.

All of what you say is true to a point. It doesn't "eliminate" it brings it down.
Can I negotiate further??

That would be $65 day. Don't know if that's high, low, or average.

that is VERY HIGH. My water bill for the month of July is $17.19.
don't see why you could not negotiate further. After all, nobody has been living there...how much water could be used?

We had a sewer hike that was outrageous here and i contacted the Utility department and told them how much I could afford to send them each month based on my financial situation. They were perfectly fine with it and even adjusted the late fee for it. Call them, but have a plan prepared first.

Absolutely right about the plan and the very reason why I am listening to all ideas.
Many thanks
