Shelby is a small town. It is the county seat for Cleveland County. There is a small mall there but you will find more shopping in Gastonia.
If you will be going to Charlotte frequently, you would be better off looking in Kings Mountain, which is between Shelby & Gastonia.
I don't think there would be a problem with your grandchildren's race in either place. I know that there would not be a problem in Kings Mountain.

Well...Monroe is the largest with about 25,000 people. Shelby has about 20,000 - Both have their own hospitals and some retail, fast food, drug stores ect, with Monroe even having a very small mall. Marshville is tiny by comparison with under 3000 in population - it is very rural but would be my pick of the three.
Schools in Shelby do not have a good reputation - they are hit and miss in Monroe and Marshville. The children's mixed race will not be much of an issue.
Monroe is closest to Charlotte (about 30 minutes), Shelby next, with Marshville being the furthest, but you could easily go from Marshville to Monroe for the shopping and medical care you might need. If you lived in Shelby what ever you couldn't find there you would find in Gastonia without having to go all the way to Charlotte (an approximate 45 minute drive). Since Monroe is largest you'd find the most of what you need right there without having to go to Charlotte. All three areas have growing Latino populations, including a fair amount of illegal immigrants - if that matters to you.

Personally, I am partial to the rural areas in Catawba county and Alexander county, especially between Conover and Taylorsville. I also really like Surry county and the area around Mt. Airy - I'd suggest you check out those areas

hahaha...
i am from Shelby and it sounds odd to hear someone say they are looking to move "to shelby"...
i couldn't wait to get away from that place.
moving to shelby all depends on your age, speed of life, etc.
there's NOTHING to do in Shelby if you're aged 18-40. All restaurants are on 1 strip of highway 74.
the mall has about 10 stores (little more, but just sayin). The main attraction is the county fair every year.
I left shelby after high school to attend college in greensboro...then moved to philly, now live in charlotte. it's funny to go back home and hear how country people sound. they say things like "whatcha doin down narrr (there)"
i'll never forget where i came from...but boy do i NOT miss that town

I just moved from the Shelby area to Huntersville, after spending about 7 years in Cleveland County. Here is my take...
As a small town, Shelby does indeed not have a lot going on. There are a couple of decent restaurants, a small and inadequate mall. But, within an hour of Shelby you can reach commercial districts in Asheville, Charlotte, Gastonia, Greenville/Spartanburg, and Hickory. So, it's very convenient to all those places.
Similarly, you are close to some really nice scenery. You can be in the mountains in about 30 minutes, and can see them from Shelby on clear days. Lots of really nice places to visit within an hour.
As far as crime goes, Shelby is actually not that great, but the surrounding areas are very safe. The schools are probably average. My wife, who worked in the Cleveland County school district for 7 years and now is working in Lincoln County, says that Cleveland County schools have their act together much more than Lincoln, for what that is worth.
As far as the biracial thing goes - I don't believe you will have any significant problems with that in Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and most parts of Cleveland County. I have only seen a few instances of overt racism while here - people generally are not overtly racial, but they are also at times disturbingly tolerant of the small amounts of racism that exist. However, I do not recommend that you consider any areas in upper Cleveland County (Casar, specifically) - while the land is beautiful, there is plenty of overt racism there.
If you are not from "around here", you would be most comfortable in Kings Mountain, where there are many more transplants from other areas, and you have good access to urban areas. Shelby and Boiling Springs are more heavily weighted towards people that have been here forever, and you may find it a little more "cliquish" and difficult to break in.
Honestly, given what you have said, I'd look closely at Kings Mountain and Gaston County. It probably offers the best combination of good real estate values and proximity to Charlotte and Gastonia.
