Default Moving to Lincolnton - What's it Really Like?

Hi - my husband and I are considering a move from Boston to the Charlotte area. We spent last weekend in the area house hunting and found a house we love in the historic downtown area of Lincolnton.

I'm looking for some current input on Lincolnton and surrounding areas. (Having done a search on this forum before, looks like related "moving to Lincolnton" posts are a few years old...)

What's great about this area? Not so great? What other towns should we consider?

We're basically looking for a smaller town, or a city that has a small town feel, that is prospering or at least growing at a reasonable pace, good to excellent schools and has or is close to many activities.

We'd appreciate any input as we'd like to put an offer in within the next week.

Thanks!
Karen

Karen, I've never lived in Lincolnton, so I can't offer you any answers to your questions I'm afraid. I just wanted to say welcome to NC and that I do love the Lincolnton area when I've been there. I've honestly never heard a complaint from anyone about living there either. It is generally regarded as a very nice place to be

I'm down the road in Kings Mountain. I looked at properties in Lincolnton, Cherryville, & Kings Mountain. I'm certain that you'll be happy there.

We do have a couple of posters in that immediate area & they can fill you in best.

There isn't a lot in common between living in Charlotte and living in Lincolnton. New South vs Old South. You didn't give any criteria, but Lincolnton is going to work for you if you are White, Protestant, Straight, Republican, fairly conservative and like being around the same. This county went 2/3rds for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

I copied this from a post/response I made a few weeks ago. I hope it doesn't scare you away. We need a few more good Yankees in the area, even if you are Red Sox fans.

"Okay BC, here it comes, the good, bad and the ugly. We relocated to Lincoln County from NJ, five years ago. Were orginally supposed to settle in to the Mooresville area where there are many Northern transplants, but a house deal fell through. So we settled in on Lincoln County (further west than Denver) because it's only 20 miles West of Mooresville and you get more house for your money in a more rural setting. Thinking to myself, my father's side of the family was all Southern (Virginia) and while yes, there is small-mindedness, they get over it after awhile, right?

That 20 miles made a LOT of difference in attitudes. There are more and more Northern transplants coming into this area so it has gotten a little better in the past 5 years. Spouse is dark too, I am light. Wish I had a buck for every time someone asked my spouse - "What are yew?" They always assume Mexican. However, people smile at me until I open my mouth and they hear the Northern accent, then a different look comes over their face. That's changing a little bit too, again, as there are more of us in the area.

We live in a very nice subdivision, but everyone is mostly retired or just starting families, and we are DINKS (double income, no kids) in our mid forties, and there are not many here who have the same interests. We love to travel. Most people either go to the mountains or the beach, and that's it. Case closed. We don't go to church. Everyone else does. The second thing they ask you after "what are yew?" is "what church do you go to?" Every thing seems to center around church here and if you don't go to church, you really don't fit in. We only have a couple of friends here.

We're now looking into possible relocation to the RDU area, primarily for the reasons mentioned above.

Now the good things about NC. Yeah, there are a bunch and I don't regret moving to the State of North Carolina. I regret not researching the exact area I am in right now, so BC you are doing the right thing and asking the right questions.

The people, for the most part, are pretty nice. Being older, my spouse and I were brought up to be polite, hold doors open for someone behind you, say please, thank you, etc. Most of our generation was raised that way. That niceness is still here in NC, unlike NJ.

There are a lot of people here who will be sweet as pie to your face and then stab you in the back. So it's hard to know who the "nice" people are sometimes. The worst ones are the loudest bible thumpers. But there are good Christian people here as well who live what they preach. So you take the good with the bad.

The weather is much, much nicer here than anywhere in the North. Yeah, we have humidity, but it's not as bad as Florida. The winters are nice and mild. We have beautiful mountains and also beautiful beaches. What little I saw from my visits to Asheville, I did like a lot. Seemed more progressive, but the job market was not as varied.

Anyway, I wish you good luck on your search. I think you will like it here, you just have to find the area that fits you and your spouse."

Spouse and I did the trek to the RDU area a couple of weeks back. Found that the grass isn't always greener... IMO, this area is a lot prettier and nicer than the RDU area. It made me appreciate my Lincolnton neighborhood upon return.

As for moving into the historic area of Lincolnton, I wouldn't. If you look at the local online news - this one lets you see where crimes have occurred in Lincolnton - The home for FREE classifieds, breaking news and stories you won't see anywhere else -- The Carolina Scoop you'll see that much of the crime is in the center of Lincolnton, the historic area and around. Spouse and I live in the county - just about 3 - 4 miles at the most past Pumpkin Center. The school system here near Pumpkin center has a better reputation/higher test scores and thus the resale value of our homes is better.

Also, stay away from the McAlister Road area in Lincolnton because it's like a fire sale out there since the new hospital is being built in that immediate area.

More advice would also be (before putting a bid in on a house) to check out the neighbors who are all around your house and across the street. Knock on each door and introduce yourself. This gives you an idea of who you may be living next door or across the street from. I strongly suggest this.

I would look into the newer (and more established are also nice) subdivisions. In the newer subdivisions you are likely to find people who have relocated from Up North and have common interests.

If there's anything else I can think of, I'll come back tomorrow night and post more. In the meantime, if you have any questions you can e-mail me at jblythe71@hotmail.com I don't do the PM option on any boards.

I think you will be happy here if you know what you are getting into and do your research before you put in an offer.

I agree with pretty much everything Jim just stated. I live in the Pumpkin Center area which is very nice and a good mixture of locals and transplants with an excellent school (the best in Lincoln County). If you have kids this may be a consideration for you. While I like to shop in Lincolnton I don't think that would have been a good choice for my family to live there. We love the horse drawn carriage rides at Christmas time and Apple fest in the fall in downtown but I like the "diversity" of the Pumpkin Center area. I am a NJ transplant, we moved here a year ago. When I tell people I am from NJ they don't seem too thrilled but once we talk for a while they say I'm not so bad for a Yankee . I am also a dark skinned Italian so I do kind of stick out. Good luck with your move.

I knew you'd tell it straight, Jim. I'm glad I bought down here in Kings Mountain. Not a soul has asked me what I am, but then they can't figure out where my accent is from.

Indeed. I would add, this must be a Protestant church if you have any hopes of fitting in. Acceptable would be in this order Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist though if you belong to any of these 3 it's more than fine. The Episcopal Church is OK, but these are considered maybe the black sheep of the family. i.e. Christians, but they are bigger sinners. Agnostic leaning Christian would be next. if you show up at church just a few times a year this is better than nothing.

Beyond the above, you will get shunned quick in this order. If you are Catholic, then they will consider you a fallen Christian and most consider that Church to be no better than a strange cult. If you are Jewish, they will go out of their way to avoid you, except for some token stuff around the Christmas holidays. Mormans would be next on the scale under Jews. Forget anything else unless you are obviously Asian looking which for some reason, doesn't bother them if you practice an eastern religion. Don't go there if you are a Muslim. Full blown Atheists are at this level too.

An exception would be that if you were in the military, served your time fighting the enemy and married one of them and brought them back to America.

If you are going there and have any hopes of being involved in local politics or a respected member of the local business community, then you have to observe the above.

Apparently, the 20 miles down here to Kings Mountain also makes a difference here. I wasn't going to mention it, but since someone else did...

Not a soul has asked me what my religion is.

I had one incident, in the late spring, which involved religion.

We had had a lot of rain & I needed to mow. The 1st chance I had was a Sunday. I heard several mowers early in the morning, but I waited until late morning out of respect for my next door neighbors. (Both of them are life-long residents of Kings Mountain.)

After I finished, I had a knock on the back door & when I opened it a strange woman handed me a business card for a church & turned around & left.

I mentioned it to my neighbors on both sides & asked if they were offended by me mowing. They both said no, to ignore that old hypocrite b****. They saw what happened & they were offended that she showed up. Both thanked me for waiting since they had services on TV earlier & both told me that if God made the grass grow, he did not care when it was mowed. That was it.
