You think our problems are bad? Just got word from Santo Domingo that there was a 7.0 earthquke in Haiti at about 5PM. Haiti,had nothing before the quake and now has probably thousands killed as I think (my bad Spanish) a hospital collapsed.
I'm headed there (SD) on Sunday and will be sure to stay out of the water since I don't swim well in tsunamis.
This is devastating news for this country which was finally working to get back on its feet. How are you going to get in there? Are airports open? Forgive my ignorance but I believe that all communications to the country is failing - was listening to BBC world service this morning and they have lost contact with their people there and even diplomats who are based there are not getting word out.
I just read a week or so ago that one of the grocery stores here on the East Coast was charging customers now for plastic bags, can't remember where though.
I've been picking up reusables and like the video says I just have to remember to take them. Just picked up a Petsmart one on Monday. I like the Trader Joe's red bags and the HT bags fit so much more than the plastic ones.

National plant, that's a good one. In 93 we went to the Grand Canyon with my BIL and his girlfriend. It was dark outside and we were walking over to the restaurant when we heard rustling in a bush, the guys ran over to discover what we still call today, a bag squirrel!

My plans are to go to Santo Domingo not Haiti which is on the other side of the island. Spoke to many of my friends in the Dominican Republic last nite and this morning and all is well there. Some friends told me that water in pools were overflowing, tremors lasting 5-6 seconds...really all very minor things.
I don't expect any problems on Sunday but I'm curious what the position of the Dominican Republic will be on allowing any Haitianos into the country. This was been an ongoing problem at the border and got worse during the financial crisis. Now. . .??
It's breaking my heart to see the pictures coming out of Haiti. If anyone wants to donate the American Red Cross have a fund that you can donate to. Say an extra prayer to your God today for these poor people.
One of my co-workers shared today that, although I knew he had extended family in Haiti, his worry has been increased. Apparently, his father had travelled there from NY where he now lives to attend his brother's funeral this past week. The aunt's home where he was staying is right on the fault line. Of course, they cannot get any kind of word on the safety of any of the family. The man is just in shock.
To make it worse, because he goes to school and works (both full time) he let his passport lapse.
So, today, he applied for an expedited passport renewal. Hopefully, he won't have to use it.
