I live in the DC area and MD has one surburb that you'd be better off living in DC, Prince George's County, a high-crime area with a whole mess of problems. Does any suburb in the Charlotte area are come even close to as bad as PG county?

In a word: No.

Charlotte has some areas that are higher in crime than others: the east side and the west side, in general. But the 'burbs are all VERY safe and generally have lower crime rates than Charlotte proper.

Hope that helps a bit.

Gastonia is, by far, the most dangerous Charlotte suburb. It's more dangerous than Charlotte by some metrics.

I didn't see those stats, sorry I missed that. The last stats I saw there was only one murder in Gaston Co. in '04 (and 8 in '03, 4 in '02; could not find more recent stats) and the majority of crime is drug offenses, vandalism, burglary. That same year there were over 200 murders in Prince George County, so I guess that still makes Gastonia look like Mayberry.

Are you just talking Gastonia, or Gaston county? Just wondering because I am thinking of moving there!

To me, and I can only use the news I hear on tv, Gastonia, is no where near as dangerous as say the East side of Charlotte for example. I haven't heard of any police officers being shot at let alone killed there, since I've been here, but I could have missed it if it happened (been here 2 years). In the last month I've heard on the news, 3 times officers in Charlotte shot at, and one of the 3 times, 2 young officers killed.
I pay attention to that because my co-worker's husband is a Charlotte officer.

Are there parts of Gastonia, that you feel are areas it's better to stay away from? The research I got just today said 8 murders in Gastonia last year, and over 70 in Charlotte. Course I understand there is a huge population percentage in comparing the two. I'm not sure how the percentage breaks down. I'm not informed enough of the population figures between Gastonia and Charlotte. How about gangs? They prevalent in Gastonia too?

I may have to rethink my move.

Do you know about the area in which Gaston College is in? I am trying to request admission to that college for a specific field it teaches.

Thanks.

I am SO laughing right now. I'm sorry.

I live in Northern VA and am moving to the Charlotte area in approx. a months time.

PG county is freakin' RIDDLED with crime, severely under-performing schools, and even worse property values. Actually, the school system is a true tragedy. Personally, I feel safer in DC than PG county -even the upscale areas of the county.

You'll be hard pressed to even find the inner city of Charlotte will bother you much compared to PG.

Have you had opportunity to visit Charlotte yet?

Stacy

Yea, Gastonia is not that bad when you're talking about places like Prince George county. It's not too nice when you compare it with Huntersville, Concord, Mint Hill, Matthews, Cornelius, Weddington, etc..
