We have 2 historic vehicles that we need to register here in NC. Can anyone tell me what the procedure is? How do they determine the value of the car for the highway use tax? I am just trying to figure out how much this will cost us. Thanks.

I'll have to ask DH in the AM as he is the one who registered our 2 classic cars. Are you looking to get historical plates also?

How historic are they? You go to DMV to register the car. This is the easy part, you present your title, write a check, they give you a regular plate. As I recall, the car is valued as an old car, so the initial tax (road tax?) was pretty low. They don't ask you what it's worth. I think it was less than what I paid for my 97 Lexus, which isn't worth much at all.

New procedure, before they will issue your title you must get your historic vehicle inspected by the license and theft bureau. I was told they will come to your house but when I called I had to take the car to them. They inspect the car to make sure it is a real 19xx vehicle, not a kit car or manufactured car.

I know something about vintage automobiles and a little about antique automobiles and some about classic automobiles but very little about HISTORIC automobiles. For example the big convertable that JFK was in when shot would be a historic vehicle. The car that broke the 300mph speed limit would be a historic vehicle or maybe the one that was used by Roosevelt in 1943 . Please tell us what is "historic" about these cars.
