I don't have a doctor here in Charlotte, nor do I have health insurance. I stepped on a nail outside today and it went right into my toe. It didn't bleed much, but I figure that I should probably get a tetanus shot, especially since I haven't had one in over 10 years.

The problem is, all of the doctors I've called charge very high new patient fees. It can be $250 alone just because I haven't been there before. Then another $100-$400 for the doctor visit, and then another $100+ for the shot. Some won't even give me prices, and say that I will have to wait to find out until after the appointment!!

Does anyone know a doctor that could take me without crazy fees?

Check here:

Free Medical Clinic, Matthews, North Carolina

and here:

The Community Free Clinic

I am so sorry you had this accident. You are right - best to get a tetanus shot and have someone check out the wound site.

Let us know if you can't get help at either of these places.

One of those Urgent Care places may be cheaper than paying new patient fees, they also should be able to give you a better idea of cost before actually going in.

When my husband had a similar accident I know that he called a few doctors (and we do have insurance) and they couldn't/wouldn't see him for an injury like that and recommended he go to the ER. Not wanting to make an ER visit for something so minor he went in to an urgent care and had a good experience.

An Urgent Care should be able to get you in and out for under $200.

I called one of the free clinics and their message said no new patients. The other one has very extensive requirements and an application process that takes too long.

I called one urgent care earlier and it was expensive, but I will try some of these other ones. Thank you!

What about a "Minute Clinic" such as CVS has? They should be able to give you a tetanus shot. DO you have any nearby? I can give locations if you don't know where to find one.

That will probably cost you under $100. Maybe be under $75.

There's the cowboy way, pour something strong over it and hope for the best.

I was just out of college, no insurance, stepped on a nail . . . and just prayed I had some immunity from that long ago tetanus shot . . . lots of hydrogen peroxide and bandages . . .

But I sure hope OP can find some help. It is hell to be low on cash and get hit with medical costs. It shouldn't be so blame hard to find some inexpensive way to address this type of injury.

I've never even heard of Minute Clinics... sounds like a good idea though!

If it didn't bleed much you probably do want a tetanus shot. Blood cleans wounds out, if it didn't bleed much more risk it could be infected.
