I am recently knocking the dust off of my old running habits and would like to find some dirt to run on. I know there is plenty of pavement and concrete paths around town, but I would like to know if anyone knows of any good dirt trails to run on?

Years ago there used to be some trails off of Tyvola RD on the opposite side of the "river/creek/stream" from Park Rd. park, we used to mt.bike them, but I don't know if they are still there and if so how many miles of trail is left. I live in the Madison Park area so would love to find some dirt around there.

I am aware of Mallard Creek, but it's a little far to drive for a run.

The mt.biking trails at Renaissance Park are an option, but looking for any more.

Can you help me!!!???!!!

A good start would be the site for the Char-Meck greenway system. I don't know that all greenways are the same surfaces as Mallard Creek, but the site details the surfaces of the greenways all around the city/county.

Park and Rec Greenways (http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/Park+and+Rec/Greenways/Home.htm - broken link)

Head over to the McAlpine Greenway - parking is on Sardis Road.

McAlpine is what I meant to say, not Mallard Creek.

I thought the Greenway was ironically mostly pavement? I could be wrong.

1' to the side of any paved track? No?

The problem with using bike track is that anyone other than bikers really isn't supposed to be there and can create some dangerous situations for themselves and the bikers.

The greenway that starts at 51 is largely dirt/gravel. You park somewhere in between Carmel Rd. and Pineville. It runs down under 485, and then after that I'm not sure. Sorry I can't remember the name!

McMullen Creek greenway is actually 1 mile of dirt and 4.75 miles of pavement. FYI - It runs from 51 to Rea Rd next to Trader Joes.

Oh, good to know! I guess I've mostly been on the mile of dirt.

I've done my share of running on the Greenway, mainly starting at Freedom Park and it's all paved. I'll have to head down to the McMullan Greenway.

Yes, 1' off of any pavement could be dirt, but I'm not looking to run in a ditch, I'm looking to run dirt trails... where I won't be competing with other traffic.
