With fall coming I'm getting really excited about finishing the landscaping in our backyard. Can anyone recommend the best place to buy large (5 gallon or larger) shrubs and trees? I'm interested in quality more than price, but both are important. We have not had any luck with Pike Nursery, so that's out.

TIA!

Growers Outlet in Pineville has good prices and a big selection, but you have to know what you are looking for. They aren't that helpful.

I found a really cool plant last time I was there, a salix flamingo shrub. I had never seen one before and wasn't quite sure who big it would get etc., so I passed on it. Now I know where I'd put one so I need to go back. The good thing about Lowe's and HD is their year warranties. We just bought 2 Crape Mrytle tree's from HD, same price as Growers. Growers has a wider variety of plants than L's and HD.

Salix ‘Flamingo’ - A flamingo you will be proud to have in your garden

Stowes Nursery on Union Rd in Gastonia.
By far the best kept secret.

If your willing......there's an older couple, they live off of Prosperity Church Rd, in the Mallard Creek area (near the University area), their yard is beautiful with a wide variety of plants, shrubs, trees, etc...that they split and sell. They probably have a few acres, tiny house, very old, been there forever. I've purchased the larger gallon plants for half the price at a retailer or nursery. She's a little low now, with the summer coming to an end.

Young's Nursery on 521, right past Lowe's in SC (just over the border) has a good selection and a very helpful, knowledgable staff. Nobody beats Growers Outlet on price or selection, but as an earlier poster mentioned you need to have a little knowlege because the staff isn't helpful (if you can find any).

Wilson's Nursery, Rock Hill. Better selection and less expensive than Young's.
