Yes, you are supposed to get your license switched within 60 days....I was here almost 3 yrs before I did mine (did switch over the registration on my car since DH got his license right away--had to for work). You do have to have your license before you can switch your registration over. And they did ask me if I had been here for more than 60 days , I replied "a little" and they guy didn't say anything....

We've been here for about 14 months and still haven't switched over our plates or licenses.

They will very much regret this if they are ever in an accident as it is a legal can of worms. If they are still carrying insurance from their home state the insurance company may have the right to refuse payment.

Here's another license question (as I do need to get this done soon): I go in with my MD license, I take their test and, for whatever reason, I flunk the test. Obviously they will not give me my NC license. So what happens with my MD license? Do I get to keep it until I try again?
And with this business of mailing licenses...same question. Will I get to keep my MD license until I get my NC one in the mail or do they issue some paper temporary license?
I ask because I need to rent a car just about every week for work, and not having a proper license (even for a week) is going to make that difficult.

if you flunk the test, they will give you your license back, I believe.
yo will get to keep your license until you get your NC in the mail. (with the new system, it took us a week to get our NC license in the mail.) You will also get issued a paper temporary license.
Items to take to get your NC license..
* valid out of state license
* social security card
* proof of residency (cable, telephone or electric bill; apartment lease, settlement statement...etc)
* $32.00 cash (they do take checks, but if the check has to go out of state, they will not accept it. Our bank is Wells Fargo with a branch in TX and even though our NC address is printed on the check, because it has to go to TX first- they wouldn't accept it.)
* A book to read (it took us about 3 1/2 hours)

No, the quote is "...residence (usually 30 days) or when gainful employment is accepted, whichever occurs first."
So if you've lived here 60 days and not gotten a job, you should change your plates.
